I take complete ownership of what Ranveer Singh wears-Nitasha Gaurav

As told to Ankita Chaurasia (MUMBAI MIRROR; September 2, 2019)

It started with a photoshoot...
Styling Ranveer Singh is as fun as it looks. Our association began when I styled him for a Filmfare shoot by Rohan Sreshtha, around all his haunts in Bandra. The three of us enjoyed it so much that I went on to style him for a personal shoot. From these interactions, Ranveer felt we had similar tastes when it came to fashion and signed me on as his stylist. It is the absolute dream job. Not only does he have a great sense of fashion but also the physique and swagger to make everything he wears look good. Every job comes with a responsibility and I take complete ownership of what Ranveer wears. I never let him walk out wearing something I am not a 100 per cent sure of. At the same time, he never wears something just because I want him to.

From the street to the star
Ranveer has never given me a brief. I pick clothes according to the event that he is attending. When he arrives, I offer him a choice of four-five different looks and explain the thought behind them. He chooses the one that he likes the most and we go with that. Every look has a statement piece that stands out and irrespective of which one he goes with, that invariably gets noticed.

I pick stuff which I feel most closely resembles his style, often from the streets on a whim. I remember these crazy pyjamas that I bought from Colaba Causeway, he made them all the rage. The next day, I was getting calls asking me which designer he had been wearing. On my travels, I hoard rings, bracelets and chains that elevate any look, making it seem well put together.

He chooses his own clothes for casual outings, and strangely, they are almost always what I would pick up if I were styling him. Because I have been working with him for so long, I guess we are on the same wavelength. It’s a good match.

That’s a perfect match!
A wedding is a very personal event and Ranveer wanted to work with designers he is close to and also complement Deepika’s (Padukone, wife) looks. We worked in tandem to create a mix of both their sensibilities. I also dressed Ranveer’s family for the different events.

Yes, Deepika’s fashion sensibilities have changed post marriage but that’s understandable. When you marry someone and live with them, some bits of them should rub off on you. If they don’t, you are doing something wrong. But if Deepika has started experimenting more, Ranveer has also started going for elegant looks. When they make appearances together, they sometimes go all out with whacky clothes and at other times, keep it classy. The idea is to make a statement together.

Trolls, who?
Both Ranveer and I don’t care about trolls. We don’t read memes. If people are talking about us, it means that we are doing something noteworthy. That’s what fashion is all about. It should start conversations, even debates. What’s the point otherwise?

Gen-Bender
Ranveer has no mental blocks. He is open to all silhouettes and colours. For us, it is not so much about breaking stereotypes but about having fun.

Who decided that men can’t wear pink? Ranveer not only wears it but makes it look hot. I’m lucky to work with someone who is open to everything. It’s liberating to work without boundaries.

DON RETURNS: At the cricket World Cup, we went with a customised suit, with an overcoat and scarf. This was old-world mafioso style with wide-cut silhouettes and vintage plaids. The quirky glares were Ranveer’s touch

WILD CATS: We chose this luxurious pink cheetahprint tux for the prestigious Berlinale. Perfect for turning heads

ON A TUNE: We went with this look for its distinctive colour and cut. Obviously, having Jimi Hendrix on it made it all the m edgy. Ranveer paired it black-and-white glare

BESPOKE-PERSON: This faux fur custom-made jacket created such a buzz! Also, it went perfectly with the film’s promotions

Coolie No 1 makers set precedent as stainless steel sippers, cloth covers replace plastic to minimise waste on set

Varun Dhawan's Coolie No 1 with a cause
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; September 2, 2019)

His athletic frame will help him bear the weight of people's luggage in Coolie No 1, but it is his consciousness towards social causes that has Varun Dhawan shoulder the burden of ridding the world of plastic. Dhawan has lent his support to the makers of the comic caper to ensure that minimal plastic is employed while shooting the film.

While the actor took to Twitter yesterday to reveal that stainless steel sippers had been provided to the cast and crew in an effort to further the cause, mid-day has it that the unit has also replaced plastic covers for devices with those of cloth. Message boards indicating a ban on the use of plastic are apparently placed at several spots on the set as well.

Producer Jackky Bhagnani tells mid-day, "Cinema is a driver of change in society. It was exciting to spread this message in a cool manner. On film sets, plastic water bottles are consumed abundantly. It leads to unnecessary waste. One step goes a long way in reducing waste, and furthering the message of reuse and recycle."

Prasoon Joshi on using his corporate experience to plug the holes in the CBFC
Himesh Mankad (MUMBAI MIRROR; September 2, 2019)

On Saturday, Prasoon Joshi, the Chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification, unveiled the new logo and certificate design of censorship in Mumbai, and cleared the air on several contentious isssues, from the importance of the present certification and additional cuts for adult films to last-minute title changes. Excerpts:

Since you’ve taken over as chairperson, controversies around film certification have been few and far between. How have you managed to resolve the issues that plagued your predecessor?
I have worked in the corporate world and my idea of running an organisation is very professional. For me, it’s important to have the house in order. So, I had several training programmes with officers and committee members and together we corrected all the glitches and plugged the loopholes. I spent most of my time in correcting things which needed attention. I’m thankful to some of the industry leaders who helped and mentored me during crisis. The change came through dialogue.

Yes, Padmaavat was the last major controversy one recalls…
I believe makers make films with good intentions and that should come through. If there is an issue, we should not drag it but resolve it through dialogue. This was a new job for me because I’m an artiste too and had to learn to see things from the audience’s point of view. I’m happy with what we have achieved during these two years.

Many believe that the 1952 Cinematograph Act is outdated.
There is a lot of discussion happening for a solution.

What’s your take on the current certifications: ‘U’, ‘U/A’ and ‘A’?
The category of certificate is important as it informs the audience what they can expect from a film. Children are our future and we need to expose them to things gradually and not shock them. Sometimes, there is a disagreement on what makers consider adult content and grouse that the committees constituted of people from different walks of life don’t know much about cinema. But they are not supposed to know; their job is to express the point of view of the common person. For instance, a woman member saying that as a mother she feels strongly about a certain content. Maybe the maker has said something with a different intent, but it might be received differently. That’s where dialogue comes in.

But why should films which have already been certified as ‘A’ be subject to further cuts and beeps?
Some things and issues are not meant for public consumption. You won’t print an abusive word in the headline of your newspaper, will you? We follow the same code of conduct. Culture with respect to what to wear on certain occasions and how to present ourselves, has been created by us and now it’s our duty to protect it. Sure, we are evolving with time, but that should happen organically and collectively. One person can’t decide what is right because tehzeeb belongs to everyone.

Titles of films like Cheat India and Mental Hai Kya were changed to Why Cheat India? and Judgementall Hai Kya just prior to their release, while their trailers and other promotional material had been cleared and were in the public domain for weeks.
The two instances you mentioned were felt ideal by the committee. It’s a different thing when a title is used in the film, but the poster as a standalone gives a different message. When sensitive subjects crop up, we need to handle them with dialogue. In these cases, we mutually arrived at a decision.

And what’s happening with Prasoon the writer-lyricist?
My hands were full as I wanted to do justice to my new responsibility, so I couldn’t take up much work. I did Manikarnika last year. A couple of scripts are in the pipeline and you’ll hear of them soon.

Kabir Khan is ebullient as he wraps up a three-month shoot for his Ranveer Singh-starrer in London, bang on schedule
Himesh Mankad (MUMBAI MIRROR; September 2, 2019)

On Sunday, Kabir Khan wrapped up a three-month schedule of his sports drama, ’83, in London, which features Ranveer Singh as then-skipper Kapil Dev who led Team India to its first cricket World Cup win in 1983. For the director and the team, it was an emotional moment as they had become close, like a family, during the shoot, and felt a sense of triumph after wrap-up, quite like the historic win. “It was like we had won the World Cup too,” Kabir laughs. “I knew ’83 was an ambitious film and we have achieved more than what we had planned.”

The director, who is also producing the film with Sajid Nadiadwala, Madhu Mantena, Shibasish Sarkar and Vishnu Induri, goes on to add that since logistically it was a difficult shoot, he airdashed to London every month for a year to work with the local production crew to get the required permissions. “Securing permissions to film at some places, like inside Lord’s cricket ground, was not easy. This is the first unit that has ventured into the players’ locker room and the long room there,” he points out, saying since they were recreating a real event, there was a lot of detailing involved in terms of locations and replications. “We had to make half of London look like it did in ’83. Shooting at Lord’s on the last day was magical.”

The film kicked off in London on June 5 and a major chunk of the shoot coincided with the 2019 World Cup. While many matches were interrupted by rain, Kabir’s screen journey was hassle-free. “We have been blessed by the Gods of cricket. We got so much goodwill from legends like Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Jimmy Amarnath, Balwinder Singh Sandhu and Clive Lloyd that even the rain god helped us out,” Kabir exults. “When we were shooting interiors, it would rain the entire day, but the minute we stepped out, it would stop. It’s rare and next to impossible for anybody to complete a big shoot in the UK on time. On paper, we were to end on September 1, and we are done,” he signs off on an ebullient note.

The makers of the action entertainer, War, will soon launch the first song of the film, which we hear will be a party track. Titled Ghungroo, the track will have the dancing sensation Hrithik Roshan and the sexy Vaani Kapoor grooving to it. Versatile singer Arijit Singh has been roped in for the duet with Shilpa Rao.

Says director Siddharth Anand, “Arijit is the biggest singing sensation of our country and we were clear from day one that we wanted him to sing our party anthem. Arijit singing a dance number for Hrithik is a huge USP for us and he has done a phenomenal job. We also have Shilpa singing for Vaani in the film. Shilpa swept away all the awards for Khuda Jaane (Bachna Ae Haseeno, 2008) and since then, she has sung in every film of mine. So, it was amazing collaborating with her again. Ghungroo is the party anthem to watch out for.” The song is composed by Vishal-Shekhar.

Saaho Box Office Collection Day 2: प्रभास की 'साहो'ने बॉक्स ऑफिस पर मचाया धमाल, कमाए इतने करोड़
Box Office India Trade Network

SAAHO (Hindi) recorded another strong day on Saturday as it recorded collections of 24 crore nett. The film had a little drop which is practically nothing though real value would be a little more as the film did not manage to release in places on Friday. There is huge negativity for this film especially in the trade but the audiences have come out in numbers for two days. There was solid growth in Delhi NCR and East Punjab of 10% which is actually excellent for an action film and for a primarily Telugu film this phenomenal for the North.

The final collections of the first day also finished in the 25 crore nett range which put the first day all India business to the 100 crore gross mark. The second day has collected around 24.50 crore nett for a two day total of 49.75 crore nett which are excellent numbers. These numbers have come with 10-12% of the normal Hindi market missing and on a non holiday with normal ticket pricing and on top there is not much star value for the Hindi markets.

Then on top there is huge negativity so the results so far are far higher than can be expected in the Hindi markets and it may not go and be a huge HIT as the emotions are missing for the core Hindi markets. But it does look like the film has a chance of doing decent business and its not a disaster for sure as far as the Hindi version goes. Even if we take a flat Sunday the film is easily going over 70 crore nett which is an excellent weekend and a restricted holiday on Monday to come.

The collections of SAAHO (Hindi) till date are as follows. The all India collections will be updated later.
Friday - 25,25,00,000 apprx
Saturday - 24,50,00,000 apprx
TOTAL - 49,75,00,000 apprx

SAAHO grossed a a solid second number of 53 crore nett across India for a two day total of 141 crore nett. The film has generally dropped in the South though Hyderabad and Bangalore are excellent. The Hindi version is strong also in Nizam/Andhra as it performed very well in Marathawada. The drop is also due to how the collections in Nizam/Andhra are reported

The Nizam/Andhra figures were is the 18 crore nett range which makes the Hindi version of the film contributing the biggest ratio of collections for the film and this trend will continue now.

The film could go near the 200 crore nett mark over the weekend and maybe even hit the 200 crore nett mark if the Hindi version can grow well as not much growth will be coming from the South. The film has cost around 320 crore including P&A and these will be very good numbers for the film but the question will be can it go on past the weekend. It just needs regular holds to emerge a big success.

The all India collections of SAAHO are as follows.
Friday - 88,00,00,000 apprx
Saturday - 53,00,00,000 apprx
TOTAL - 1,41,00,00,000 apprx

Batla House Box Office Collection Day 9: John Abraham's Film Earns Over Rs 69 Crore
Box Office India Trade Network

BATLA HOUSE has seen a big drop in collections as SAAHO dominated the market. The film collected around 3.25 crore nett in its third weekend which has taken its lifetime total to 84 crore nett apprx. The target for this film is probably the business of LUKA CHUPPI (88.50 crore) and BADLA (87.56 crore).

The 90 crore nett mark is probably an outside chance for the film as there will be new release every week. The best business of the film is in Delhi/UP as it is almost 22 crore nett till date. Last year SATYAMEVA JAYATE had done 18.50 crore nett in its whole run in Delhi/UP.

The business of BATLA HOUSE till date is as follows.
Week One - 57,70,00,000
Week Two - 23,06,00,000
Friday - 60,00,000 apprx
Saturday - 1,10,00,000 apprx
Sunday - 1,60,00,000 apprx
Third Weekend - 3,30,00,000 apprx
TOTAL - 84,06,00,000 apprx

MISSION MANGAL had a drop in business in the third weekend due to the release of SAAHO but it still managed healthy collections of 9 crore nett. This takes the figures of the film 181 crore nett with the figures in Mumbai closing in on the 60 crore nett mark which will be a first for an Akshay Kumar starrer.

The film has done superb business as a 190 crore nett finish is a huge number for this film which did not have any commercial elements. It will be the highest Akshay Kumar NETT grosser though the GROSS will not beat 2.0 (Hindi). But this film cant really be compared with 2.0  considering the zone of MISSION MANGAL which is basically a small film.

The business of MISSION MANGAL till date is as follows.
Week One - 1,22,82,00,000
Week Two - 48,95,00,000
Friday - 1,50,00,000 apprx
Saturday - 3,00,00,000 apprx
Sunday - 4,50,00,000 apprx
Third Weekend - 9,00,00,000 apprx

Saaho Box Office Collection Day 3: Prabhas' Film 'Packs A Phenomenal Total' Of Over Rs 79 Crore In First Weekend
Box Office India Trade Network

SAAHO (Hindi) has recorded fantastic numbers over its first weekend with collections of 79 crore nett and the highest Sunday of the year with collections of over 29 crore nett. These figures have come with hardly any business from the South markets and no blockbuster picket prices and on a non holiday weekend. The weekend numbers are the second best of the year after BHARAT.

The trend of the film over the weekend is pretty strong as well. The film dropped a little on Saturday as the actions films open big on single screens and they always see a drop on day two but then showed solid growth on Sunday as these single screens recorded full houses on Sunday.

The film was expected to be a disaster by the trade in Mumbai but that it wont be even if collections crash out on Tuesday and the weekend trend does not suggest a crash like a ZERO or THUGS OF HINDOSTAN. If the film was to be a disaster it would have fallen over the weekend itself which has been seen with films before which have been totally rejected. This does not mean that the film is a HIT also as it remains to be seen what happens over the next 2-3 days.

The all India collections may hit the 200 crore nett mark for the first three days but the best performance is the Hindi markets. The standout is North India which is far above expectations. Gujarat/Saurashtra is by far the best of the Hindi circuits but that can always be expected with a South film while North is tougher market to crack for South Indian films. In Gujarat/Saurashtra the collections on Sunday were better than the first day Eid day collections of BHARAT.

The collections of SAAHO (Hindi) over the weekend are as follows.
Friday - 25,25,00,000 apprx
Saturday - 24,50,00,000 apprx
Sunday - 29,25,00,000 apprx
TOTAL - 79,00,00,000 apprx
----------------------------
SAAHO grossed a huge 190 crore nett apprx in the first three days though the collections from South are big but probably not as per expectations as the drops are there. The film has done better business in Odisha than Kerala, Bihar is more than Tamil Nadu and North has done more than Karnataka/Mysore which pretty much tells the story and the compared South circuits should have done more than the Hindi ones.

The comparative figures for 2.0 were 155 crore nett but the holds are not likely to be as strong as that film which held up well in Hindi Circiuts, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. In the Hindi circuits it has beaten BHARAT in Mumbai, East Punjab and Odisha. In the Hindi belts of UP, MP, Rajasthan and Bihar it would have beaten BHARAT also but BHARAT had Eid holidays in those places so they remain strong for the first 3 days.

The all India collections of SAAHO for the weekend are as follows.
Friday - 88,00,00,000 apprx
Saturday - 51,00,00,000 apprx
Sunday - 51,00,00,000 apprx
TOTAL - 1,90,00,00,000 apprx

Jayalalithaa biopic no longer titled Jaya in Hindi; to bear the same title as in Tamil at Kangana Ranaut's behest

Kangana Ranaut's Thalaivi to rule all of India
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; September 4, 2019)

JayalalithaaThe Jayalalithaa biopic was christened Jaya in Hindi with its Tamil and Telugu counterparts being titled Thalaivi. However, mid-day has learnt that leading lady Kangana Ranaut has had a change of heart with regard to the film's title. Rumours suggest that the Hindi offering may be rechristened Thalaivi after Ranaut explained to the makers that the film may benefit from having a uniform title across languages.

A source reveals, "Director A L Vijay and the team had refrained from using Thalaivi as the title since they felt that the word would alienate audience beyond the South belt. However, Kangana recently had a word with the makers and pointed out that Bollywood films have often had titles that may not be necessarily Hindi, but have stayed true to the film's milieu."

"An example being Kai Po Che (2013), that derived its title from the Gujarati phrase and went wonderfully with the story. The actor told the makers that the Hindi version should bear the same title as the Tamil and Telugu offerings, and suggested that a tagline could be added with 'Jayalalithaa' or 'Jaya' in it so that there is no room for confusion regarding the film's subject. The makers are considering her recommendation."

I'd rather do good Bengali film than any movie in Bollywood-Raima Sen

Raima Sen
Smita Poojary (DNA; September 4, 2019)

Twenty years ago, when a 17-year-old Raima Sen made a foray into films with Godmother, it was tough for her to find her bearings because she hadn’t had formal training in acting. However, projects with some of the most powerful directors in the Indian film industry, such as Aparna Sen, Rituparno Ghosh and Pradeep Sarkar, helped her hone her skills. The actress shares, “It’s been a great experience from my first film with Shabana Azmi to now.

Today, I’m a director’s actor because whatever I have learnt has been on the job, while filming.” The Bengali beauty speaks to us about why her Bollywood movies are few and far between as well as her upcoming Hindi flick, Aliya Basu Gayab Hai.

Tell us something about your movie Aliya Basu Gayab Hai...
The film explores the relationship between three people played by Vinay Pathak, Salim Diwan and me. It’s not just a regular love triangle but also involves bisexuality. Director Preeti Singh is so sorted and knows exactly what she wants. She is a to-the-point and no-nonsense kind of a lady. She was great for a debutante feature film director.

What made you say yes to the film?
It has just three characters and I’m one of the main leads, so it is a solo-heroine outing for me. I liked the story. Also, Vinay, with whom I have worked before in Kagaz Ke Fools (2015), is a great actor, which helped me bring a lot more to the table.

Even though you’ve been appreciated for your work in Bollywood, we see you in a few Hindi movies?
I was doing a lot of things in Bollywood till five years ago. Since then, I have done some brilliant Bengali films, with National-Award-winning directors and my films are winning National Awards, too. I’d rather do good projects like these in Bengal than just about any film in Bollywood. Also, because I have the backup of another industry, I don’t have to free fall and do whatever comes my way in Hindi cinema. I’ve had the privilege of choosing the best from what I get. Since the Bengali industry was giving me more lucrative offers, as well as substantial roles, I chose that for four years. But this year, you will see me in a lot of web series — three with ZEE5 and one on another platform. You will see me back in Bollywood in full swing.

Will Bollywood be your priority?
I would love to be in both industries. I can’t and won’t ignore Bengali cinema because it has made me who I’m. Of course, I’ve been caught up with Hindi projects this whole year and nothing there. However, if there is something great that comes from there, I will do it.

Is there a difference in the filmmaking process in both the industries?
Bollywood has more money and a bigger platform where there is more recovery. Comparatively, in Bengal, the returns are not that great, so the movies are made on a tighter budget. In terms of the working style, a film is a film and only the language is different.

You recently began shooting for ZEE5’s series Love. Sleep. Repeat...
I had a great time because it was a new experience for me. My co-actor Anshuman (Malhotra) is excellent, even though he is so young. It was a refreshing change for me.

What are your upcoming projects?
Apart from two Hindi web series, I have the third season of my Bengali show, Hello.

MUMBAI MIRROR (September 4, 2019)

Bruna Abdullah, who tied the knot with long-time beau Allan Frase in May this year, has welcomed their first child, a baby girl. On Sunday, the model-actress shared a photograph of her bundle of joy on Instagram, informing her fans and followers that the new parents have named her Isabella. “I am so proud and excited to introduce the newest member of our family… She was born on the August 31 in Mumbai!” Bruna gushed.

Bruna, who rose to fame with a guest turn in the Akshay Kumar and John Abraham-starrer Desi Boyz in 2011, went on to add that the mother-daughter duo is doing well. “We are doing great! I can’t stop drooling over her,” she said.

Excited and nervous in equal measure about headlining her first woman-centric film, Kriti Sanon on playing a surrogate mother in Mimi
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; September 4, 2019)

Kriti Sanon on playing surrogate mother: Challenge to portray emotions I've never feltAfter the success of Luka Chuppi, Kriti Sanon is reuniting with director Laxman Utekar for Mimi, which revolves around surrogacy. While industrywallahs may discourage young actors from playing a mother on screen, Sanon is certain that letting the film pass would have been a mistake.

"Dino [Dinesh Vijan, producer] had acquired the rights of the Marathi film, Mala Aai Vhhaychay [2010], a while back. When he had told me about the concept, I loved it and it stayed with me. Months later, while we were on a flight, he narrated a part of the story casually to me, and I had goosebumps, and tears in my eyes. When a film has that effect on you, you know you have to do it," smiles the actor, who will share screen space with Pankaj Tripathi.

Given the movie's premise of a young woman becoming a surrogate for a couple, netizens have quickly drawn parallels with Vicky Donor (2012) that had Ayushmann Khurrana play a sperm donor who helped reproductively challenged couples. "Donating sperms and going through pregnancy are way different from each other," she argues, dismissing the notion of any similarity between the movies. "This film is about a young girl who has dreams and aspirations, and how becoming a surrogate to a couple changes her life. It can't be compared to any film that has been made here."

Sanon has enjoyed a spate of successful films in the recent past. She understands the weight of expectations that comes with Mimi, which will be her first woman-centric project. "It is a huge responsibility and I am nervous as well as excited. The story is so divorced from my experiences, and I have to portray emotions that I have never felt; that makes it challenging. But I want to take risks. I'm glad that Mimi will be my first so-called female-centric film."

John Abraham: Will include Southern 100 and classic TT races
John Abraham procures permission to shoot his biker film around Isle Of Man roads, considered among the world's deadliest
Sonil Dedhia (MID-DAY; September 4, 2019)

When John Abraham announced his yet-untitled biker film earlier this year, he had promised that he will shoot crucial racing sequences at the Isle Of Man TT (Tourist Trophy) circuit. The actor-producer, who is currently laying the groundwork for the Rensil D'Silva-directed venture, tells mid-day that he has procured permission to shoot on the Isle Of Man, which is considered one of the fastest and deadliest in the world. The roads are closed to the public during the races.

"The film has been in development for more than a couple of years, so it has been a well-thought-out plan as to how we want to proceed with it. I have seen many races on the Isle Of Man and we've done our recce. I met Laurence Skelly, the Minister for Enterprise, and he is happy to host us and allow us to shoot the film. It will be the first Hindi film to be shot there," he informs.

A true blue racing enthusiast, Abraham has designed the schedule in such a way that they can film the live Isle Of Man Tourist Trophy that takes place every summer. "We will kick off the shoot in April. The races usually take place in May and June, so we want to capture the real essence of those races, including the Southern 100 and the classic TT. If I have to draw parallels, I would say that this film will be like Rush [2013]. It's not going to be about mindless racing, but also about human emotions."

Jackie Shroff on the best phase of his career, being proud of all that his kids have achieved and reuniting with buddies Sanjay Dutt and Manisha Koirala after 20 years
Hiren Kotwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; September 4, 2019)

In the Hindi film industry, there are few things as consistent as the unassuming side of Jackie Shroff. When asked how he picks roles today, the 62-year-old actor shrugs, “Pehle dost aate the... A cameraman’s assistant would ask for help, entreating, ‘It’s just two days work, meri life ban jaayegi.’ On occasions, Subhash ji (Ghai) would ask for 10 days and you can’t say ‘no’ to the boss and at times a subject like (Mahesh Bhatt’s) Kaash would come along and I’d do it. So, I did films for friends, for the production house, even for money and that’s still the case today.”

He is just as matter-of-fact when taking stock of his career, pointing out that he can fit in anywhere, from the terrorist in Mission Kashmir to the intelligence chief in Romeo Akbar Walter (RAW), from the aiyaash in Devdas to the superstar in Rangeela. “It doesn’t matter if the role is big or small, whether I’m named first in the credits or second. I didn’t care for these things,” he asserts and you recall how often he’s played the hero’s elder brother or best friend. “I never wanted to upstage anyone. Doosre ka pair kaat ke apun lamba banne ka kya matlab hai?”

But wouldn’t things have turned differently if he wasn’t quite so accommodating, you wonder, and he informs that his character in RAW was inspired by the agency’s founder-director RN Kao. “The current RAW chief praised my performance. What more do I want?” Jackie exults, adding with a smile that even South supermo Rajinikanth played his younger brother in Uttar Dakshin. “Sab mere chhote bhai bante the. I’m a Turkish Gujarati, so my bone structure is a little bigger, even Anil’s (Kapoor) face is small.”

In his next, Prassthanam, Jaggu plays Raghu, the royal guard. The film reunites him with the film’s producer and lead actor Sanjay Dutt and actress Manisha Koirala after 20 years. Their last outing was Kartoos. “There was a free flow of energy because for us, it was like picking up from where we had left off. Even though the industry is a small world sometimes it takes years for friends to meet and working together takes even longer. We love each other intensely but don’t need to say it aloud. Ishq ka zyada izhaar karo toh kharaab ho jaata hai,” he maintains.

Over the years, Jackie has acted in around 13 languages, from Bhojpuri, Punjabi, Oriya and Bengali to Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Gujarati and Konkani, and considers the present to be the best phase of his career. “My son (Tiger Shroff) is the youngest action hero in the world and I’m known as Tiger ka baap today. After doing 220 films, I’m known as Tiger ka baap,” the proud father beams, adding, “My daughter Krishna is running her gym, interesting roles are coming my way, what can be better than this?”

Considering that his daughter has assisted on films, why isn’t she pursuing a career in films? “Salman (Khan) wanted to make a film with her, many others also asked, but my daughter is not interested in an acting career,” he signs off.

Chaya Unnikrishnan (DNA; September 4, 2019)

Since his debut film Vicky Donor (2012), Ayushmann Khurrana has chosen scripts that are unconventional or pathbreaking. So much so that, he has become the go-to actor for subjects that are out of the box. With his last release, Article 15, the 34-year-old has delivered five back-to-back hits, starting with Shubh Mangal Savdhaan as well as Bareilly Ki Barfi in 2017 apart from AndhaDhun and Badhaai Ho last year. And, of the 12-odd films that have released so far, four of them have won National Awards! These include Vicky Donor, Dum Laga Ke Haisha (2016), Badhaai Ho and AndhaDhun. The latter also fetched him the Best Actor Award. Ayushmann says, “I am a seeker of good stories. Stories that move us, entertain us and spark a conversation. I love stories that people can relate to, are inspiring and makes us ponder. I have actively sought such amazing scripts and have been fortunate enough to find some of these brilliant gems in my career so far. I consider myself extremely lucky that four of my films have won National Awards and I have also bagged a National Award for Best Actor.”

The actor adds that the National Awards are a huge validation for his script sense because he only chooses films that he would love to see in theatres. “I look for stories that are unique and are essentially about the incredible common man. As an actor, I invest deeply in choosing the right script because, today, the story and the choice of films are all that matter. I think I’m at a stage in life where I could do the best projects because audiences expect good cinema from me. I won’t be able to give them and myself any less.”

Ayushmann’s upcoming films are in line with his quirky sensibilities. There’s Dream Girl in which he will be seen as someone with a special ability of talking in female voice, Bala in which he will be shown as a guy dealing with premature balding, Gulabo Sitabo where he shares screen space with Amitabh Bachchan in a unique tenant-landlord relationship, and last but not least, Shubh Mangal Zyada Savdhaan, which deals with the sensitive issue of gay relationship. He will essay a homosexual character in this sequel of Shubh Mangal Savdhaan.

Zareen Khan on body-shaming trolls, finding support in Anushka Sharma and staying fit
Hiren Kotwani (MUMBAI MIRROR; September 4, 2019)

“Many people have double standards. On one hand, they criticize a celeby’s pictures on magazine covers and billboards, saying they are photoshopped. On the other hand, when someone posts a real picture, with all her imperfections, she is trolled,” Zareen Khan sums up the reactions to a picture she shared on the social media in which she is posing at Lake Pichola in Rajasthan, her crop top revealing the stretch marks on her stomach. The actress goes on to add that when she posted it, it wasn’t as an actress but as a person and it wasn’t about her but the beauty of her surroundings. “But many viewed it as a picture I’d posed for, be it for a magazine or a brand.”

The actress who was last seen in Vikram Bhatt’s horror film, 1921, points out that there are thousands of apps to edit pictures and make them perfect. “But I didn’t feel the need to use them because I don’t believe in hiding my imperfections. I believe everyone is imperfect in their own way. As a teenager, I weighed over 100 kg and when you lose 50 kilos, your skin tends to get loose and leave stretch marks. I’m proud of what I have achieved. It’s not about becoming picture-perfect for people but for myself. This fitness journey made me the person I am today, a part of the film industry, and I feel blessed. And before I could reply to the trolls, several fans stood by me,” she beams.

One of those who stood up for her was Anushka Sharma and Zareen applauds the actress, saying, “That was very sweet of her since Anushka and I are not even friends. We’ve met each other briefly at social gatherings. It takes a strong woman to recognise another. I’ve come a long way in the journey, but I would still require photoshopping. But I like to be the real me on the social media.”

Zareen isn’t the first actress to be body-shamed. From Malaika Arora to Sara Ali Khan, many have been trolled and shamed for their posts but they continue. “I don’t know if they are disturbed or frustrated looking for solace on the social media. I’d certainly like to see the kind of bodies people posting such comments have. Thank God it’s a small section and you shouldn’t take them seriously,” she says fervently, admitting that this platform that has given them direct access to celebs is both a boon and also a curse. She is however quick to reason that even in real life you meet some unpleasant people and her response to such trolls is with the Rajesh Khanna song from Amar Prem, “Kuch Toh Log Kahenge, Logon Ka Kaam Hai Kehna”.

Flashbacking to her teenage years, she admits she wasn’t a disciplined eater and wouldn’t even walk down to the end of the lane. But over the years, she’s learnt the importance of a balanced diet and doing some physical activity. “If you don’t take care of your body, you will collapse and end up in the hospital. You should do at least 30 minutes of exercise every day to keep fit,” she asserts.

Depending on her schedule, Zareen chooses her regimen. On easy days, she opts for weight-training, strength training, functional training, cardio and when her schedule is hectic, it’s yoga or pilates. “Exercise should be a way of life, not a punishment. My trainers keep changing my regimen, so I don’t get bored,” she points out. And to ensure that she doesn’t gain unwanted kilos while not starving, she’s opted for the Keto diet and intermittent fasting. “Keto is a fad now, but I took my time to research it and have been following it for over two years now. Intermittent fasting works wonders without making you feel you’re starving yourself,” she informs. And what happens when she succumbs to temptation? “I’m human, so the temptation to cheat will be there. But from the time I’ve been on Keto, I don’t have too many cravings.”

Himesh Mankad (MUMBAI MIRROR; September 4, 2019)

After wrapping up a major chunk of his next, the horror comedy Laxmmi Bomb, Akshay Kumar will bring in his 52nd birthday on September 9 in London. He will be flying out this weekend with wife Twinkle and kids Aarav and Nitara.

The actor was in London recently with his mother Aruna Bhatia and posted a picture of himself wheeling her around the Queen’s City, pointing out that no matter how busy you are with life and growing up, it’s important not to forget that your parents are growing old too and spend some time with them while you can.

Talking about the upcoming birthday, a source close to the actor informed, “It will be a lowkey celebration for the Kumars. The idea is to spend quality time with the entire family.”

Last year, Akshay had turned 51 with a family dinner in Mumbai. Among the guests was friend and Housefull 4 co-star Bobby Deol. In 2017, he had vacationed in the snow-capped mountains of Switzerland for four days. This year too, the family break will last for less than a week, as the birthday boy is scheduled to kick off a film in Mumbai after which he will start promoting Sajid Nadiadwala’s Housefull 4, which opens this Diwali. The Farhad Samji-directed reincarnation comedy features Akshay in two avatars. In the present day, he is a barber and in the Bahubali era, he plays a character who is bald and sports a handlebar moustache.
