Chaya Unnikrishnan (DNA; August 30, 2019)

After essaying the role of a hockey player in Soorma (2018), and an octogenarian sharpshooter in the upcoming film, Saand Ki Aankh, Taapsee Pannu is all set to play an athlete in Rashmi Rocket. The film is about an incredibly fast runner, Rashmi, who hails from Kutch, and the villagers fondly call her Rocket. But when she gets a chance to showcase her talent professionally, she realises that the journey has many hurdles. Her quest turns into her personal battle for respect, honour, and her identity. Directed by Akarsh Khurana, this is a fictional narrative and not based on any real sports personality.

Says Taapsee, “This story instantly hit the right chord when I heard the idea. It’s one of those few films I was waiting to be developed into a script for me to do. Funnily, I have been made to run in almost every film I’ve done in every other genre. But this time, it’s going to be an out-and-out athlete’s tale. What excited me the most was the human drama that unfolds in her life, which makes it much more than a regular story of an athlete.” Akarsh reveals that the project was conceived in Florence, Italy. “Taapsee was there for a film festival with Manmarziyaan (2018) and Mulk (2018). I was at the same event with Karwaa (2018). We saw each other’s films, had some great food, and jammed over an idea that she had.”

The film is produced by Ronnie Screwvala, who shares that he couldn’t think of anyone better than the Pink actress to play this role. “Rashmi Rocket is the story of a girl who achieves and conquers in her field despite all the adversities that come her way. I cannot think of anyone better than Taapsee to play this character. This is a sportsperson’s story that needs to be told with a certain level of sensitivity and no one better than Akarsh to helm this.”

Couple is keeping it low-key with board games, books and long walks during their week-long stay
Himesh Mankad (MUMBAI MIRROR; August 30, 2019)

Ayushmann Khurrana, who won his first National Award recently—for his turn in Sriram Raghavan’s AndhaDhun— has taken a break from the promotions of his next film, Dream Girl, to holiday in Austria with wife Tahira Kashyap. According to a source close to the actor, the couple left for the destination on August 24 and are scheduled to return to Mumbai after a week. “Ayushmann had been looking forward to the break as he has worked continuously for the last six months. They will be exploring the scenic Salzburg and Altaussee,” the source informed, adding that the couple is spending their time reading, playing board games and going for long walks.

On Thursday, Ayushmann documented his trip on social media, noting, “Sukoon ki talaash mein duniya ghoom lo. Hota tumhare andar hi hai. (sic)” Tahira kept it more playful, taking a dig at her actor-husband’s competitive attitude. “He was so determined to beat me that he got the chess to the room! (sic),” she remarked.

Last year, it was reported that Tahira is gearing up to make her directorial debut with a slice-of-life film. The project was put on hold when she was diagnosed with cancer. “Now, she is doing pretty good with the treatment. Once they are back in Mumbai, Tahira will continue to fine-tune the script, while Ayushmann will get back to his next release,” the source shared.

Shilpa Shetty joins PM Narendra Modi to make India fit
Actor is part of board that will advise Centre on country's fitness and health in Fit India Movement
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; August 30, 2019)

In a bid to 'move the country towards a healthier future', Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a nationwide Fit India Movement on National Sports' Day on Thursday. It is aimed at encouraging people to include physical activity and sports in their everyday lives. Actor and fitness enthusiast Shilpa Shetty Kundra is one of the 28 people who will aid Modi in realising this goal.

"Fitness is not just a word but a pre-condition for a healthy and fulfilling life. It should become a revolution," Modi said. The inaugural event in New Delhi was attended by Shilpa along with Delhi BJP president Manoj Tiwari, BJP MP Gautam Gambhir and athlete Man Kaur.

Shilpa told mid-day, "I am honoured and excited to be part of the advisory committee of the Fit India Movement. It is extremely gratifying to be able to lend my voice and support to a milieu that I have great passion for. It was wonderful to see Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji speak about fitness at length. There is no better idea than this, to move our country towards a fitter direction. Kiren Rijuju is spearheading this movement and I am more than happy to be joining hands with him."

A source said, "Shilpa's involvement in the movement will be as a member of the advisory board committee which is headed by Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju. The committee comprises 28 members including government officials, members of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), National Sports Federation, private bodies and fitness promoters."

With several stars personalising the content on their YouTube channel, Varun Dhawan too is looking anew at the digital platform. The actor is ready to kickstart a special chat show, where — in a role reversal of sorts — he will assume the part of the host as he interviews his childhood idols. The series, that drops online today, will open with Sachin Tendulkar.

A source close to the actor informs, “Being an ardent fan of the Master Blaster and having grown up cheering for him, Varun wanted to kick off the show with him. The actor was completely at ease in his new role as he sat down with the legend to discuss his unparalleled career in cricket, life after retirement, and even anecdotes from the last Ashes match. Varun also opened up on his memories of watching Sachin play at different tourneys. The discussion then steered towards their fitness, with both sharing diet tips.”

The series will see the actor interviewing celebrities from the world of sports, culture, food and of course, movies. “The line-up is being worked on,” adds the source.

Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 director Anees Bazmee: Writing a character that suits Akshay
Sonil Dedhia (MID-DAY; August 30, 2019)

Kartik Aaryan While fans of Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007) cheered the news of Kartik Aaryan fronting the sequel, the development was followed with what was arguably the all-important question — will Akshay Kumar, who headlined the smash hit, be part of the latest instalment? Anees Bazmee, who has been handed the directorial baton from Priyadarshan, tells mid-day that the script of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 — written by Farhad Samji and Akash Kaushik — is being designed such that the superstar can be included in a special appearance.

Anees Bazmee"I would be more than happy to have Akshay sir in the film. I have worked with him in the past [Singh Is Kinng, 2008, and Welcome, 2007] and we share a cordial relationship. We haven't completed the script yet. There is an attempt to write a character that suits him even as the narrative stays in sync with the first film. I hope he likes the character and agrees to do it," says Bazmee, adding that Aaryan is rooting for the superstar to come on board. "Kartik will be the happiest if Akshay says yes as he is a big fan. [His presence] will also widen the film's reach."

Currently giving the finishing touches to his comic caper Pagalpanti, Bazmee plans to take the sequel of Bhool Bhulaiyaa on floors only in December. While he has displayed his mastery over comedy, the director agrees that horror-comedy will be a new genre for him to explore. "Since I have never attempted a horror-comedy before, I need to understand the styling of the film and live up to people's expectations. I am also aware that comparisons will be made [with the prequel]. On my part, I will be honest with my work and try my best to make a good film."

The largest bridge in the Portuguese city was cordoned off for a massive action sequence
Dhaval Roy (DNA; August 30, 2019)

Porto in Portugal is one of the 15 global cities Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff’s action entertainer War has been shot at. The movie, also starring Vaani Kapoor, will see the two heroes pitted against each other in a ferocious showdown. Now, we have learnt that while filming a massive action sequence there, the city’s largest bridge called Porto was shut down for two whole days.

Director Siddharth Anand says, “We shot an intense, high-speed action sequence between Hrithik and Tiger. The scene required Tiger to chase down Hrithik and this extensive sequence required us to get permission to shut down the main bridge at Porto for two days. The local authorities were extremely supportive, and we got all due clearances to shoot this adrenaline-pumping scene.”

The director added that the locals were stunned! “They had never seen their city in lockdown mode ever. They were super-curious and came to see which film had locked down their bridge. Their reactions were priceless because they were amazed seeing the kind of high-octane action that Hrithik and Tiger were performing,” informs Siddharth.

(Crisp) Movie Review: SAAHO by FENIL SETA

$

Saaho has the scale, grandeur, the best of the technicians and Prabhas, an all-India star. Yet, it fails to entice chiefly because of the weak direction by Sujeeth. I wish if Shankar or Ali Abbas Zafar had handled this film. Despite the poor storyline, a good director would have taken the film to another level. But Sujeeth loses control in the second half with the film going all over the place. Too much action and too many twists and turns – almost each and every person has a hidden agenda! The disappointment is quite high since the first half of the film is watchable with a great twist during the interval point. Prabhas’s performance is quite massy and heroic but his dialogue delivery in Hindi is very weak. Shraddha Kapoor delivers a wonderful performance and excels in the action scenes. Chunky Panday is too good as the villain and great to see that he can play comic as well as negative roles with equal ease. Arun Vijay is quite scary and suits the part. Neil Nitin Mukesh is dependable and looks great. Murali Sharma has an important part but is sidelined in the end. Mandira Bedi also has a significant role and here’s one actor who deserves to be seen more. Tinnu Anand, Mahesh Manjrekar, Prakash Belawadi, Vennela Kishore and Evelyn Sharma are decent. From the songs,'Psycho Saiyaan' (changed to'Kaiko Saiyaan') is the best. The 9 action directors in the film do their job very nicely but it’s not put together well. All in all, Saaho is an epic disappointment!

Sunny Deol: Wrong notion that people will line up to sign Karan
Sunny Deol on why he felt the need to launch son in Bollywood despite his star-kid status
Sonil Dedhia (MID-DAY; August 31, 2019)

Sunny Deol is admittedly nervous as he counts the days to the release of Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas, which marks son Karan's debut in the movies. One may assume that he didn't trust anyone else with the responsibility of creating the perfect launch vehicle for his son, and hence, stepped up for the job. But Deol insists there's another reason to the decision. "From the outside, it may seem that people will line up to sign Karan since he belongs to the Deol family. But it doesn't work that way. In our family, the elders help a child in taking the initial step. After that, he is left to figure things for himself. So, I need to guide Rocky [Karan] and give him a platform to showcase his talent, initially."

Deol has been juggling his directorial duties with his political commitments. The senior actor, who won the Lok Sabha elections from Gurdaspur, has come under the scanner for his frequent no-shows at the Parliament. Quiz him on it, and he asserts, "I respect people's views, but I will do what I want to. We are not puppets. If a man is going to do his job worrying about what others are talking about him, then he won't be able to do it."

Richa Chadha turns entrepreneur; has acquired trademark for a business venture with social leaning

After turning producer with a Punjabi short film Khoon Aali Chithi and green-lighting a feature film with which she will launch her banner, Richa Chadha is now venturing into another aspect of business for those in the creative fields.

She has already acquired the trademark for the enterprise. What will be different about her venture is that it will have a social leaning. The Fukrey actress has always spoken about the causes close to her heart, like animal welfare, and has been actively involved in them. She has worked with PETA for Odisha government to help curb elephant crossing deaths due to railways, and was part of the UN march for rape survivors in Delhi.

A source says that the actress feels the status of art and artistes in India needs a solid boost. Her business venture will serve as a platform for those working in literary and visual industries. “Richa has been quietly planning this for the last two years. The trademark came through only last week after which she started the hunt for the right investors to mount the project. Though the business primarily caters to the specific needs of people working in creative professions, such as artists, actors, writers, musicians and so on, it will have a social angle. This venture stems from Richa’s belief that artists of every medium — visual or literary — must be valued and measured up right,” adds the source.

I am not in favour of films being remade-Mohnish Bahl

Mohnish Bahl

Eighteen years after he made his TV debut as Dr Shashank in the serial Sanjivani, Mohnish Bahl is back on the small-screen reprising his role in the reboot of the medical drama. The actor is known to take long gaps between projects, but he immediately gave his nod to this show. “When Siddharth P Malhotra called and told me that he plans to remake the show, I said I would like to do it before he completed the sentence. This series has a lot of memories for me — I like the role, the feel of it, and it’s a nice place to be in,” smiles Mohnish. On the big screen, the 58-year-old will be seen in the historical war drama Panipat five years after his last outing, Jai Ho (2014). Here, he talks about taking a long hiatus from films and TV,  his daughter Pranutan Bahl’s foray into movies and how today’s newbies can’t afford to make mistakes.

Why do you take such long gaps between your projects?
I’m a bit particular about the work I do. It should appeal to me. There are so many projects that I say no to because they don’t excite me. Then I disappear and people forget about me until somebody like Siddhu (Siddharth P Malhotra, Sanjivani’s producer) remembers me (laughs).

What appealed to you about Sanjivani 2?
I started my journey on TV with this. It was a wonderful show about human emotions. It felt nice to revisit it all over again. The first one ran for a good four-and-half-years — those were the days of weekly shows. I felt we had more steam and there was more to do. I am playing the same character, but he is aged about 15-18 years since then. He has matured with time as we all do. He is mellower and stubborn at the same time. When you are younger, you emphasise your views more strongly in society and make your place. As you age, you become calmer and accept life for what it is. Also, it will be nostalgia for the show’s fans. Besides, all the cases have human interest stories. With every illness comes a family’s life story.

The trend of remakes has caught on in a big way in films, too...
Yes, but I’m not so much in favour of films being remade. I don’t believe a film like Sholay, Deewar, Hum Aapke Hain... Koun! or Hum Saath Saath Hain should be remade, unless it’s in another language or social environment, because the magic happens at that point of time. I feel if you package the same product, it’s a copy. Why go there? Unless, you take a very old film and adapt it to modern times, like the Ramayan and the Mahabharat or Deewar set to today’s times.

You are returning to films with Panipat five years after Jai Ho. How was the experience?
It was lovely to get back on the sets because I don’t shoot so much. I do films once in a while.  There should be some viability when I come on screen otherwise all the years of good work gets washed away by your last release. I would like to be viable and credible. Panipat is my first period drama and wearing those clothes and jewellery was amazing. I was more decked up than our leading lady! I am playing Nanasaheb Peshwa, who sent the Maratha army to battle against all odds, against the wiser wisdom of his generals. That’s the call of the duty that takes over. Marathas had various arrangements and agreement where they were supposed to protect northern states.

Your daughter Pranutan seems to be as picky and choosy as you. After Notebook, she hasn’t signed any movie...
That comes naturally to her. She is a bit particular. When I joined the industry in the ’80s, we as newcomers had a lot of work available to us. There were different types of cinema in terms of A, B, and C. We were afforded a lot of mistakes in our career. You could get away with a bad film here and a bad performance there. Today’s kids don’t have that liberty or flexibility. They do a couple of bad films and they are written off. They have to be careful about what they sign. In my time, one producer was making three films, now three producers are making one film and there is a studio backing them. The budgets have gone up. Kids who are debuting now have to be careful about what they choose. They need to present themselves at the top of their game every time.

The film didn’t fare well at the box-office...
We were disappointed with that, but I  personally liked the film, I liked her work and Zaheer’s (Iqbal). You don’t know what’s going to happen on a Friday. There is a strong element of luck and chance and that’s what all of us play with.

How did Pranutan cope with it?
She is a strong lady, educated, with a head firmly on her shoulders. She has done masters in law. She is level-headed and knows what this business is about. She has seen it with her father — the ups and downs, and being at home without work. Being an actor is a very insecure business. She knows that but obviously knowing and experiencing it are two different things. What I like about her is that she accepts the commercial non-success of Notebook but at the same time she has got very good reviews from the industry and the critics. That’s a big plus, it’s not like she’s been written off.

Smita Poojary (DNA; August 31, 2019)

After stunning the viewers with her sizzling dance moves in songs like Dilbar (Satyameva Jayate) and Saki Saki (Batla House), Nora Fatehi has now been noticed for her acting chops in the recently-released track Pachtaoge opposite Vicky Kaushal. Nora tells us that she is happy with the feedback. “I’m used to doing dance-oriented tracks where physically it is exhausting. But this song was in a different zone and required acting skills, too. I didn’t want to come across as overacting, so I tried to be as natural as possible with my performance.” Though she has been cast mostly for club bangers, Nora says that she came to India to be an all-round performer. “I am inclined towards acting and came here to do both. When I’m in the environment of performances and emotions, I feel I’m in the right place. And I’m happy that people have appreciated my work,” says she.

This is the first time that Nora and Vicky have featured in a project together. She tells us that sharing the screen space with the National Award winner (for Uri: The Surgical Strike) was a unique zone to be in. Unlike the usual dance-only environment, it was also about acting. “There was a point where you had to switch on your performance and I could see him do that, and it motivated me to do the same, which for my growth is important,” she points out. Their sizzling on-screen chemistry in the track is also being talked about. “I think for both artistes, the chemistry helps and attracts the audiences. It’s making them want to watch the video more and more. And I think we just did our job right as actors.” Off-screen, she states that working with the Manmarziyaan actor was a fun experience.

“I thought it would be a serious environment on set because he is such an intense actor. But we had a blast, we were joking, telling each other stories about our work and so on,” she avers.

Nora who has been part of two remixes — Dilbar and Saki Saki. The dancer-actress says that she would have loved to feature in the recreation of Tip Tip Barsa Paani (Mohra, 1994) or Helen’s numbers. “Unfortunately, Tip Tip has already been done,” she rues, “If that or Mehbooba (Sholay, 1975) is ever re-recreated, I would love to be a part of it,” she concludes.

Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke, Rose Leslie were at a Himalayan retreat for 15 days
Avinash Lohana (MUMBAI MIRROR; August 31, 2019)

Months after the hit American show Game Of Thrones concluded following eight seasons, two of its stars, Emilia Clarke and Rose Leslie, have set the internet buzzing. This time for a different reason. On Friday, 32-year-old Brit actress Clarke, who played one of the protagonists Daenerys Targaryen aka Khaleesi on the show, shared a series of images with a disclaimer: “This is NOT an ad, this is just two gals buzzed off our faces on India, peace, being robbed blind by monkeys, (we hardly put up a fight) the best two books I’ve read in years, yoga, spice, mamma earth and figuring out that all you’re ever looking for can be found within. Corny as hell but my God is it true (sic).” The post, which also featured Leslie (who played Ygritte on the show), soon had Indian GoT fans, welcoming the duo.

The girls stayed at a wellness retreat in the Himalayan foothills near Rishikesh. “Emilia and Rose had planned the visit well in advance and stayed there for 15 days. As a part of a wellness programme, they took part in several daily practices to rejuvenate themselves. They also participated in the Ganga aarti and did a bit of sightseeing as well before heading home on Thursday,” informs a source.

The duo also caught up on their reading, with Clarke recommending two books—Richard Powers’s The Overstory, which is about nine Americans whose unique life experiences with trees bring them together to address deforestation, and Jessica Andrews’s Saltwater, which she said is a “must-read”.

After the trip, Clarke headed straight to work. “#bollocksdoesthatmeanitstimetoworknow?” she had added in the post. Interestingly, Leslie met her husband, actor Kit Harington, who played Jon Snow, another central character on GoT, during filming.

Mumbai revives its colonial charm. Actress Adah Sharma takes a ride on the Victoria carriage, which has now made a comeback as an electric buggy
Ismat Tahseen (BOMBAY TIMES; August 31, 2019)

They’ve been part of innumerable books as well as served as backdrops in yesteryear movies, adding a colonial charm to Bombay of yore. We’re referring to the beautiful horse-drawn Victoria carriages that operated in the city for close to a century. Four years ago, a ban citing animal cruelty forced them to withdraw and fade away into oblivion. Not for long. The carriages are back and how! Animal lovers can take heart from the fact that the revived carriages operate without horses. The new avatar as battery-operated, e-buggies are set to hit Mumbai streets on September 1. BT, however, could not wait and hopped on one before its official launch and got a first-hand experience of what it felt like to ride Victoria 2.0...

‘THE PLAN IS TO ROLL OUT 40 E-BUGGIES IN PHASE 1 IN THE CITY’
Imagine taking a leisurely ride on a comfortable buggy past the city’s iconic structures. As the colonial charm of South Mumbai unfolds before your eyes during the ride, an audio guide narrates the history of each heritage wonder. You can get off, stroll around and hop onto another e-buggy. Says Ketan Kadam, who along with actor Dino Morea, is responsible for the revival of the carriages, “The Victorias were once such a beautiful part of the city. We wanted to bring that charm back albeit in an e-buggy style.”

Ketan Kadam says, “You can just stop them anywhere and hop on and off at will. Unlike horse-drawn carriages, these electric buggies can navigate heavy traffic routes easily. The plan is to roll out 40 of them in Phase 1.”

While the e-buggies look like their predecessors, the feel is something else — they are a 2.0 version of the former. He explains, “The rides are equipped with a GPS-triggered audio tour, so when the carriage stops at a certain place, like Gateway of India, you choose your language and it will auto-narrate the history of the Gateway. There are also bluetooth speakers for riders to enjoy their kind of music.”

BUGGIES TO HIT SOBO FIRST
The e-buggy will initially cover lesser congested routes. Says Ketan, “The buggies will begin ferrying people in South Mumbai, which covers areas like the Gateway of India, Ballard Estate, Nariman Point, CSMT and Fountain. In the second phase, they may ply in Five Gardens, Dadar and Carter Road, Bandra.”

We caught the carriage on a rainy morning at CSMT, as it stood glistening in the early drizzle. Curiosity about the new buggy also got actress Adah Sharma to come across Town to clamber aboard one. “I was a part of the demonstration seeking a ban on horse-drawn carriages, as I was and continue to be against animal abuse. So, I am really excited to know that there will be e-buggies, which will not involve any cruelty against animals,” she said, adding with a glint in her eyes, “The electric buggy is also romantic; I’m going looking for someone to share a ride with me.”

MUMBAI’S ROMANCE WITH THE VICTORIA
Decades ago, the Victoria carriages were an intrinsic part of the cityscape. Says historian Deepak Rao, “The earlier Hack Victorias that operated in 1890s had licensed stands and were an important form of transport. People who came out of railway way stations hopped into them just like with a taxi stand today. They also had powerful big horses, not ponies. They had proper numbers on it. Remember Victoria Number 203, a movie that was made on it in the seventies? The carriage was part of the era of sheer romance in the city. Couples would ride in it and draw the hood over to enjoy some privacy. Over time, when the traffic increased in the city, the government decided to slowly stop their licensing. 1976 was the cut-off year for it and in that year, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic, under the authority given to him, stopped the licensing totally. This e-buggy is smaller, but it’s also a welcome innovation. And in a way, the new ones hark back to that old era.”

MUMBAI MIRROR (August 31, 2019)

Actress-politician Urmila Matondkar has said that her husband Mohsin Akhtar Mir hasn’t been able to communicate with his parents, who live in Kashmir, for the past 22 days.

“The question is not about abrogating Article 370, but the manner in which it was done,” she told the media, adding that her in-laws suffer from diabetes and high blood pressure.

She added, “Both my father-in-law and mother-in-law are diabetic and have high blood pressure. Today is the 22nd day since Article 370 was abrogated and neither my husband nor I have been able to speak to them. Moreover, we have no clue if they have medicines available at home or not.”

Earlier this month, Home Minister Amit Shah announced in Rajya Sabha that the government has decided to revoke Article 370 of the Constitution which grants special status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The government had also announced its decision to split the region into two Union Territories—Jammu and Kashmir, which will have a legislature, and Ladakh, which will be without a legislature.

“There is an amazing scene where she is wearing an incredible Elie Saab gown. If looks could kill then Vaani is the one! She plays the role of someone who always enjoys dressing up and plays with fashion. I did a lot of mixing and matching. I think it gave her character the gravitas, yet it didn’t need to be very serious.”

Roshmila Bhattacharya (MUMBAI MIRROR; August 31, 2019)

When Anees Bazmee approached Boney Kapoor with a story of three men and their sexual peccadilloes, which he had written and wanted to direct, the producer was game and they quickly decided that Anil Kapoor was apt for Kishan, the newspaper editor with a suspicious wife. “I had written films like Laadla and Deeewana Mastana featuring Anil, and knew he had great comic timing,” Anees reasons, saying they then approached Saif Ali Khan for the role of Shekhar, Kishan’s employee whom he treats like a younger brother. “Saif wanted to play Kishan but since Boney ji and I were convinced Anil was the best choice, we took Shekhar’s role to Fardeen.”

Salman Khan was Prem, though the director is quick to point out that his Prem unlike Sooraj Barjatya’s shareef, seedha family man, was a charming womaniser whose extra-marital affairs sparks off this comedy of errors and terrors. “Salman bhai had allotted only a day for the climax, but when I told him I needed three, he immediately agreed to stay back in Phuket,” Aneees reminisces. The climax was one of the film’s USPs, with the trio going over the edge of a cliff and hanging on to a tree for dear life, as a snake slithers by. “After we shot there, it became a popular tourist attraction and came to be known as the ‘No Entry Spot’ till the Tsunami washed it away.”

Anees surprises you with the revelation that after wrapping up the film, he had to wait for more than a year to release it. He had started writing his script with the title No Entry because, he reasoned, for a married man to court a woman other than his wife is like entering a ‘no entry’ zone. However, to his surprise, most members of his frat disliked it intensely and he was surprised by the almost violent reactions.

“People would snap, ‘Bakwaas hai’, and for a while I flirted with other, titles like Pati Patni Aur Woh, but eventually decided to stick to No Entry,” narrates the writer-director, who was later rewarded when it heard the audience raving, “Bahut achcha title hai”, encouraging him to experiment with Welcome, Ready and Singh Is Kinng.

But before that Anees almost despaired of his film seeing the light of the day. In fact, two days before the its release on August 26, 2005, he was suddenly told that it had been pushed again. “We finally opened without any advance booking and when I heard that there were very few people outside Chandan theeatre in Juhu, I resigned myself to the fact that two years of hard work had gone down the drain and went to sleep. I was woken up by the same well-wishers calling me a few hours later to say that the film was playing to a full house. In fact, business was better in the second week, with blackmarketeers doing brisk business. Even 14 years later, No Entry hasn’t gone into vanwas,” he exults.

Interestingly, despite its risqué subject and an escort, Bobby, at the centre of the plot, the film is seen as a family entertainer. Anees however reveals, tongue-in-cheek, that he knows of many husbands who have managed to distract their better halves from seeing the entire film, afraid that “unki sab pol khul jayegi”.

Prod him on Bipasha Basu’s Bobby who drives the men crazy when she enters the “Ishq Di Galli” and Anees informs that when the actress heard that this song was to be filmed on her, she begged him for 15-20 days to shed the weight she had put on during a holiday in the US. She turned up a fortnight later, looking gorgeous and her sexy moves still makes pulses race.

“Boney ji had wanted to shoot the song on a lavishly-mounted set in Mumbai, had allotted a Rs 3 crore budget only for it. Anu Malik (composer), Sameer (lyricist) and I had cracked while on our way to Lonavala. It was so catchy I immediately knew we had a chartbuster,” reminisces Anees. They eventually shot it in a real club in Bangkok, located opposite their hotel. Raju Sundaram who choreographed mostly for films down South, was cajoled into directing it and Anu’s opening beat became No Entry’s signature tune, used in the background at significant points in the narrative.

In the years since, talk of a sequel has come up several times. Anees admits that two years ago, he locked a story which can take the franchise forward. “We juggled five stories before settling on this one which took six months to finish. Now, I am waiting for Salman bhai and Boney ji to greenlight the project. Bahut khusboorat picture banegi,” he promises.

Actress on row over her univ admission, her friendship with Suhana Khan and Shanaya Kapoor, and carrying Chunky’s party legacy forward
Himesh Mankad (MUMBAI MIRROR; August 31, 2019)

Have things changed after the release of your debut film, Student Of The Year 2?
Oh yes, and the biggest change is people coming up to me to discuss work. Before the film, I was recognised as Chunky Panday’s daughter, now people know me from SOTY 2. I can’t say I have learnt much since I am just one film old, but I have realised the need to be careful while facing the camera as every facial expression is magnified.

Have equations with friends changed?
I need my friends to keep me grounded and detached from films. I like going out to lunch with my school friends and I am happy they don’t treat me differently now. I’m just 20 years old and want to live a normal life.

There was a controversy around your admission at a prestigious US university. How did you deal with it?
I have inherited my father’s thick skin which helps me deal with trolls. My natural instinct is to ignore them. I know the truth, so do the people around me. So I don’t need to prove anything to anyone.

Would you say a film like SOTY 2 was a good launch for you given the criticism it faced for being superficial?
Doing a Karan Johar film was a dream and I couldn’t have asked for a better start. We never claimed we were bringing a realistic film to the theatres, nor was it a documentary. When we got backlash for the trailer, we tried to convey that it was a popcorn entertainer.

Well, even the first ‘student’, Alia Bhatt, came in for plenty of criticism before she made a mark with films like Highway and Raazi.
My dad always warns me against taking a leaf out of someone else’s career graph, but I look up to Alia’s filmography, She’s my biggest inspiration. I believe my next films will present a different side of me. As an actress I want to try everything.

But won’t age go against you, typecasting you as a teeny-bopper?
I know that I am young and that I look young but the audience will grow up with me and see me in more mature roles with time. I’m glad that I started at 20 because over the years, I can portray characters of different ages on screen.

‘I was wild; my daughter is nothing compared to me,’ your dad said in a recent interview. What is your wildest memory of Chunky?
I have heard so many crazy stories, people still talk about his New Year parties in the ’90s, when guests used to randomly show up. I’m really not as wild as him but I would like to carry forward the legacy of his New Year parties.

Would you like to do a film with him?
I’d love to do a comedy, something in the David Dhawan zone, as he’s known for his comic timing.

Now tell us something about the girl gang of Suhana Khan, Shanaya Kapoor and you?
We grew up playing acting games. Shanaya is making her debut soon and Suhana, a brilliant actress, is studying at an acting school. We are still in the zone when we’d play games but while people think our conversations only revolve around films, we discuss normal things like other teenagers. But since we are from film families, we know how things work in the industry.

Any possibility of the three of you teaming up?
I really want to do a girls’ version of Dil Chahta Hai or Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. Even an original story about three best friends would be perfect for Suhana, Shanaya and me.

BATLA HOUSE had a good second week of 23.50 crore nett and took its it two week total to 83 crore nett and is a HIT film. The drop in the second week is just 60% and that is taking the extended eight day first week with a a huge national holiday on day one. So its a strong trend.

It was hugely helped by the open week and the weekend collections boosted by Janmashtami in the second week. With SAAHO releasing today, there will be a huge drop in collections but the job is done and the film has worked in the bigger centres. The clash has worked its favour as the film  would have had no chance of doing this sort of business had it released on a normal day even with a solo release.

The second week collections are the tenth best of the year and pretty much similar to films like BHARAT and GULLY BOY which were 24 crore nett apprx and 25 crore nett apprx respectively. The film has comfortably crossed the business of the highest John Abraham solo starrer SATYAMEVA JAYATE which did around 80 crore nett last year.
