Avinash Lohana (MUMBAI MIRROR; March 9, 2017)

After Shabana Azmi agreed to play Nargis’s mother, singer-composer-actress-fi lmmaker Jaddanbai, Nandita Das has now roped in Shabana’s husband, veteran poet-lyricist-screenwriter Javed Akhtar for a cameo in the Manto biopic toplined by Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

Akhtar will be returning to the screen eight years after Madhureeta Anand’s Mere Khwabon Mein Jo Aaye. He will play a college principal who vehemently defends Saadat Hasan Manto’s right to express himself.

The late writer, playwright and author, considered among the greatest short story writers in South Asia, was tried for obscenity six times — thrice before 1947 in British India and thrice after independence in Pakistan — but was never convicted.

“It’s exciting that Javed saab has agreed to act in the film. I just read out the role to him on the phone and he said ‘yes’ and I shall be meeting him for a reading soon. I’ve known him for 20 years, since Fire, and am grateful that so many people are trusting and supporting me,” says Nandita, adding that Akhtar’s character will appear in court when Manto’s obscenity case is being tried. “It will be interesting to see a progressive writer defend another progressive writer,” she smiles. The real life husband-wife won’t be sharing screen space in the film.

Avinash Lohana (MUMBAI MIRROR; March 9, 2017)

A day before her 30th birthday, Shraddha Kapoor flew off to Europe on a vacation with her friends, Ankita Choksey, Fazaa Shroff Garg, Rohan Khatau, Viraj Kapur and Karan Raj Kohli, after a pre-birthday bash with her family and close friends at her Juhu residence. The first stop was Berlin.

The group strolled the streets of the German capital, going over the Oberbaum Bridge which crosses the river Spree and wandering into Konzerthaus Berlin, a concert hall in the Gendarmenmarkt Square in the central Mitte district, and taking in the exhibits at the Pergamon Museum in Museum Island and Checkpoint Charlie — the bestknown Berlin Wall crossing point between East and West Berlin during the Cold War.

“Shraddha is having a great time and in constant touch with her family. She’s been doing some shopping too, picking up a jacket for dad, Shakti Kapoor, and other gifts for the whole family,” informs a source.

From Berlin, which they explored on electric scooters, they’ve now moved to the Czech capital, Prague, and enjoyed breakfast there at the Mistral Café, a hip eatery with Modern European dishes in the menu. She will be returning to the Bay this weekend.

Meanwhile, Shraddha’s dog, Shyloh, has been moping around, sitting outside her room, waiting for her to return. Earlier when she was shooting for the emotionally intense Haseena Parkar biopic, after an exhausting day on the sets, she would spend time with Shyloh. “It always rejuvenates her. She spends at least 15-20 minutes everyday after returning home with her puppy,” adds the source.

How sex workers helped Vidya Balan become brothel madam Begum Jaan

Filmmaker Srijit Mukherji discusses how sex workers in Kolkata's Sonagachi area helped Vidya Balan become Begum Jaan and how the actress saw it as a story of survival and not as a woman-oriented film
Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; March 8, 2017)

In the rough cut of the trailer for 'Begum Jaan', Vidya Balan emerges as a glorious figure — a brothel madam, holding on to the last of what's her own. She was always meant to be the hero of this historical drama, insists National Award-winning Bengali filmmaker Srijit Mukherji.

“When I first approached her with the script, she was taking some time off from work. So, I went on to make Rajkahini (the Bengali original starring Rituparna Sengupta). A year later, when I came around to Vidya and showed her that film, she was stunned with the characterisation. She was also surprised by the world I had created; it's not often that such stories come to the forefront of popular literature. Going by the script, she thought the milieu resembles Mandi (1983 film featuring Smita Patil and Shabana Azmi), but the backdrop was more historical. In three hours, she gave her nod,” says Srijit.

Though inherently feminist in tone, Vidya saw the film as a story of survival, Srijit says. “She wasn't trying to do another woman-oriented movie. As a sharp, versatile actor, she absorbed the spirit of the film. 'Begum Jaan' makes her choices and is fiercely protective of her space, much like Vidya. The space could be her body, or her home.”

When she arrived on the set on day one, Vidya had already immersed herself in the character, exuding the “aura, arrogance and authority” of a brothel madam, Srijit recalls. “She insisted on laying out the backstory of the protagonist and we spent a month doing just that. We dissected her fiery side. I have shot an entire film in Sonagachi [a red light area in Kolkata], and Vidya studied those women and why they chose the lives they did. Some were forced, some lured… some have taken it in their stride, grudgingly accepting it as their fate. Then there were these firebrand women, proud, irreverent and unapologetic.”

Inspired by the works of Sadat Hasan Manto, including Toba Tek Singh, Dog Of Titwal and Khol Do, Mukherji gives his film a contemporary twist.

“I wanted to bring to the forefront stories of the ostracised and the marginal lot, like Manto did. This film is not just the story of Partition. It rises to create an umbilical cord joining 1947 to 2017. The right to space could apply to anyone today, be it those who are evicted from their property in the name of development or refugees across the globe,” he explains.

MID-DAY (March 8, 2017)

Rinku Rajguru, who became an overnight star following her turn in Nagraj Manjule's Marathi blockbuster, Sairat, appeared for her class 10 exams yesterday. "I covered the syllabus in just over a month of study," she said while arriving at the exam centre in Solapur.

Talking about taking to her books while filming for her next projects, Rinku said, "The transition from lights, camera, action to physics, chemistry, math was not difficult. The one-and-a-half months I got for studies was enough."

The National Award-winning actress, and ex-student of Jijamata Kanya Prashala girls' school in Solapur, pulled out of school last year, after securing an 81 per cent in class 9 exams. While her parents attributed it to her "hectic schedule", reports suggested crowds that regularly gathered near the premises to catch a glimpse of the young icon put other student to inconvenience.

Sairat earned over Rs 100 crore and became the highest grossing film in the history of Marathi films.

Amitabh Bachchan reunites with on-screen mother Rohini Hattangadi after 27 years

1990: Agneepath was released and it’s one of the milestones films featuring Amitabh Bachchan as a central protagonist.

2017: Sarkar 3 is set to release and Big B continues to stay on as the central protagonist.

The common factor between the two films apart from Big B? Well, Amitabh Bachchan is reuniting with his screen mother Rohini Hattangadi after a gap of 27 years. This time around, though, it appears that the two will be indulging in a bloody face-off.

Says our source, “The veteran actress played Sr Bachchan’s mother in Agneepath. It could well have been Nirupa Roy, considering the fact that she was still alive back then (and later even returned to play his mother almost a decade later, in Lal Badshah (1999). However, director Mukul S Anand thought that Rohini Hattangadi would be the right fit for the part of the mother, which was clearly inspired by Miriam Colon’s act as Al Pacino’s mother in Scarface. He managed the casting coup, even though the 65-year-old actress is almost a decade younger to Big B (he’s 74).”

It wasn’t the first time that the two had played on-screen mother and son, though. They were seen together in Shahenshah (1988) as well. Surprisingly, after 1990, the duo never shared screen space.

“Ramu (Ram Gopal Varma) wanted something different for his cast of Sarkar 3, though,” our source adds, “Since the film is set in Maharashtra, he needed a lady with a very strong screen presence and excellent command in anything and everything related to the state. In the film, she is playing a character that goes by the name of Rukku Bai Devi.”

The Kapoor kids — Sonam, Rhea and Harshvardhan — are the party planners for their mom’s birthday in London
Upala KBR (DNA; March 9, 2017)

Sunita Kapoor planned a big birthday bash in London for husband Anil Kapoor’s 60th last year in December. Close friends and family members all flew to UK, and Sunita planned everything from the venue to the menu.

Now the star wife turns 60 on March 25, and the actor is shooting in London for his next film Mubarakan. The workaholic that he is, he isn’t taking any time off. So the family is flying down to London again but the celebrations will be on an intimate level. It will just be a dinner and the children — Sonam, Rhea and Harshvardhan — are taking care of the arrangements.

Sonam confirms, “Rhea, Harshvardhan, mom and I will fly out to London to celebrate mom’s birthday with dad. It’s just celebrating with the family. He’s shooting, so the birthday celebrations will be a quiet, intimate affair and not like the grand bash we had for dad. You know how dad is when he is shooting. He is completely immersed in it and he doesn’t like to be distracted.”

Mohar Basu (MID-DAY; March 8, 2017)

Gurmehar Kaur, 20, joined a social media campaign against the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) after clashes at Delhi's Ramjas College last week. She was trolled on social media after she posted, "Pakistan didn't kill my father, war did," on Facebook.

Reportedly, her father, Captain Mandeep Singh, died when a post in Jammu & Kashmir came under attack in 1999. While popular personalities like Randeep Hooda, Virender Sehwag and Babita Phogat slammed her, she received support from the intelligentsia of Delhi University and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal.

Now, mid-day has learnt that producer Guneet Monga has made a short film, titled Shut Up (still of the film below), which focuses on freedom of speech. She wants to inspire the audience to have a voice. It presents a fictionalised account of the raging controversy around Gurmehar.

"It's time we get out there and speak up. Our voices need to be heard, and as filmmakers, it's our responsibility to make relevant cinema," she says.

Directed by Ashutosh Pathak, the story revolves around a man, who participates in a silent protest only to find revolution in the most unlikely place. Shut Up releases online this week and stars Arjun Radhakrishnan and Anuritta Jha.

Natasha Coutinho (MUMBAI MIRROR; March 9, 2017)

Emraan Hashmi’s debut production, Captain Nawab, in which he plays the title role, has a new member on board. Actor, producer and self-proclaimed critic Kamaal R Khan aka KRK is the creative consultant on the project.

Buzz is, KRK is also the co-producer but he refuted the claim saying he will “only contribute creatively not fi nancially”.

Speaking to Mirror, Kamaal says, “I am helping the team on their script. I have been advising about what integral elements are required to be incorporated. Director Tony D’souza is a good friend so whenever he asks for my advice I’m always available to help as a creative consultant. Zee is producing the film.”

Tony is also co-producing Captain Nawab in which Emraan will play an army officer for the first time. In the film’s first poster, half the uniform was that of the Indian army and the other half of Pakistan. When quizzed on this he had said, “That’s the DNA of the film. I know it’ll spark off assumptions but I’ll hold the suspense for now.”

Emraan and Tony last collaboration was the 2016 biopic, Azhar.

Lakshmi V (BOMBAY TIMES; March 9, 2017)

Gauahar Khan is in a happy space these days. She has been soaking in the appreciation that has come her way for her short film, Peanut Butter. While she will be seen in a cameo appearance in Badrinath Ki Dulhania, her big release for the year is Begum Jaan, in which she plays Vidya Balan's close aide. Excerpts:

What about short films excites you?
Web content is accessible to all, but there are only a few scripts that make an impression. So, when people offer me challenging roles, I don't think twice before accepting. In Ek Dopahar and Peanut Butter, I've played characters that I haven't played before. In the latter, I play a mother who is not yet one. My role should be impactful, length doesn't matter.

You have interesting roles in Badrinath Ki Dulhania and Begum Jaan.
When director Shashank Khaitan offered me a cameo in Badri..., I wanted to know why he chose me for just a guest role. But I was convinced when he told me that my character is crucial in shaping Badri's viewpoint. Begum Jaan is close to my heart. One day, I received a text from Vidya (Balan), saying both she and director Srijit Mukherji wanted me to play Rubina. I was so happy that I told them I would even do 10 auditions to land the role. But turns out, Srijit had me in mind while writing the script because he'd liked my work in Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year. The fact that a National Award-winning director has given me this film without even auditioning me makes me feel that I've credentials as an actress.

Despite being appreciated for your debut role, you didn't do many films thereafter...
I've no backing in the industry, and like every newcomer, I've to time and again prove myself. Right after Rocket Singh, I did Zangoora; I've to my credit 1,200 shows of the biggest live Bollywood musical ever. I am hungry for good roles; I chose the best projects because I didn't want to be just a prop in films. I want people to remember me for my character.

10 facts you didn't know about Badrinath Ki Dulhania

BOMBAY TIMES (March 9, 2017)

Karan Johar's Badrinath Ki Dulhania, starring Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt, and helmed by Shashank Khaitan, is an instalment of the 'Ki Dulhania' franchise. The first in the series was Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania two years ago. It clicked with the audience in a big way which led the film's makers to construct another one and extend the franchise. While the first film was a love story that paid homage to Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, this one is a more mature and responsible take on love, revolving around the aspect of respect in every relationship, especially the one between life partners.
BEHIND THE SCENES
- Alia's Vaidehi Trivedi is an airhostess who is extremely career-driven and focused. Her strongest relationship is the one she has with herself. She's ambitious and expects respect from her partner apart from a lot of love.
- Varun's Badrinath Bansal is a spoilt brat, who hasn't seen a strong female figure in his life. He falls in love with Vaidehi in a matter of a few meetings and even sends her family a marriage proposal without knowing whether she's game for it too.
- The film was shot in cities like Kota, Jhansi and Haridwar, apart from Mumbai and parts of Singapore, which have been well-utilised in the film to take the story forward.
- Bappi Lahiri and Anuradha Paudwal's hit, Tamma Tamma, was reinvented for this film as Tamma Tamma Again with a rap portion and hip with a rap portion and hiphop beats. The moves were designed in a way that while they look novel, they also doff a hat to the original song. Badri Ki Dulhania is a spin on Pinjrewali Muniya, a classic song, popular in several regions of North India including Uttar Pradesh.
- Most members of the crew are under 30 years of age, which makes it an extremely young team. This helped while making the film. Everyone's opinion was counted in. Everyone had suggestions and voiced them openly. Director Shashank would take decisions after weighing all opinions.
- The cast and crew of the film turned the studio floor into a dance floor on the last day of shoot. They were filming Tamma Tamma Again. And the minute Shashank called 'Cut'' they became very emotional. But after that, it was party time.
- Alia cried a lot while making the film. It was not the scenes or any trouble from her co-actors or director. In most cities, hotels didn't serve diet food. She had to consume some fattening food which made her cry.
- There's a crucial scene in the film, which scared Varun a lot. He had to manhandle Alia's character which brings about a twist in the story. He could only do it well because Alia co-operated with him.
- Varun and Shashank would look at Alia for validation after shooting a scene. If she laughed loudly, they'd know the scene has turned out fine. But if she had a fake laughter, they knew a retake was the way forward.
- Shashank was writing another film which Karan Johar didn't quite like. Then he wrote three scenes across 22 pages and narrated it to him. He was sold on it, and called Varun to narrate it to him. Varun was among the first artistes to come on board and Alia got her narration much later because she was shoot ing another film.

QUOTE ROOM
Alia Bhatt: Often, we say 'I love you' without realising what we're saying. Love comes with a lot of responsibility. HSKD had a lot of puppy love. In this movie, we're in a more mature space. It's a responsible love story. It's not easy to love someone because it entails a lot more than just love. When you grow older, you realise that a relationship is more than just loving someone.

Varun Dhawan: Emotion wise, you can't do melodrama now. I think that's the USP of Badrinath Ki Dulhania and it's because we have a director like Shashank Khaitan. He is from a small town, so he's able to capture the pulse of it, yet his sensibility is such that he can make the film extravagant.

DIRECTOR SPEECH SHASHANK KHAITAN
When I came up with the story, it had nothing to do with any franchise. It's a love story, the theme being of love and marriage, and respect in a relationship. When I shared the script with Karan, he felt there was a certain warmth and suggested the title Badrinath Ki Dulhania. We took a few days to live with the title, to see if it works. I fell in love to see if it works. I fell in love with the title. The film is not an extension of Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. Badrinath and Vaidehi are different characters, in a new world and respect in the relationship is important for this love stories to be successful. I'm happy with the response the trailers and the songs have garnered. I hope more and more people come to see the film and take back the message. It's an entertainer for the entire family; for the young and old alike.“

Badrinath Ki Dulhania, produced by Dharma Productions, releases tomorrow.

Early in his career, Paresh Rawal was typecast and almost exclusively played negative characters. It took a Priyadarshan to rescue him from being a baddie with Hera Pheri. In recent years, he has been seen in several comic roles. Now, Sultan director Ali Abbas Zafar has cast him in his spy thriller Tiger Zinda Hai, starring Salman Khan. The two actors were last seen together in Ready.

Says an insider, “He hasn’t been seen in such a role before. His character will surprise audiences.”

Of Paresh’s inclusion, Ali says, “I have always been a fan of his work and what he brings to his characters. I am fortunate to be part of a film which is Paresh Rawal’s first with Yash Raj Films.”

TZH will go on floors around March 15.

Salman Khan's hotly anticipated film, Ali Abbas Zafar’s Tiger Zinda Hai, begins shooting from March 15 in Austria. But he hits the Zee Cine Awards stage four days earlier on March 11.

Salman will dance to his own medley of hits, including his recent chartbusters Baby Ko Bass Pasand Hai (Sultan) and Jumme Ki Raat Hai (Kick) and will make a stylised entry “in a blaze of glory,” says a source.

His act has been choreographed by Shiamak Davar.

Ashley Rebello, who is styling Salman for the ZCA, adds, “I don’t like to dress him frivolously as all the youngsters follow him. For the show, he is wearing a black, sequinned jacket with a little bit of leather trimming, a black shirt and a pair of trousers. For the red carpet, he’s wearing a midnight blue chequered shirt, with a white or black jacket.”

Mr Karan Johar, I was playing the badass card, not the victim-Kangana Ranaut

Kangana Ranaut is spoiling for a fight and responds to Karan Johar’s accusations in kind.
As told to Roshmila Bhattacharya (MUMBAI MIRORR; March 9, 2017)

In the battle of barbs, Kangana Ranaut has fired the latest salvo. The actress who is at a retreat down south, is not letting Zen get in the way of what has turned into Bollywood’s Battle of the Sexes.

Earlier this week, Karan Johar, arguably one of the most powerful men in the Hindi film industry, while speaking on the sidelines of an event at the London School of Economics, hinted that Kangana may not have understood the meaning of the word nepotism, that he was fed up of seeing her play the ‘woman card’ and ‘victim card’ and that if the actress had such a problem with the way Bollywood functions, she should think about quitting it. Johar’s sharp attack was in response to Kangana’s comment on his TV show of February 19 where she called him the “snooty flag-bearer of nepotism” and hinted that he was running a “movie mafia”. Speaking to Mumbai Mirror, a combative Kangana tells it like it is.

I can’t speak for Karan Johar’s understanding of nepotism. If he thinks that it is restricted to nephews, daughters and cousins, I have nothing to say. But, to say that he chose not to give me work is to mock an artiste. As importantly, his memory appears to be poor because we worked together in a movie (Ungli), which was produced by him. And quickly realised our sensibilities did not match.

I’m also at a loss to understand how he gave me a platform by inviting me to be on his show. (Johar had said that he gave Ranaut a platform to “give it off to Karan”.) I’ve been on several platforms before with several global icons. To say he helped me voice my opinions is to discredit me as an artiste and a public personality. And, I think, it should be added here that I was invited to be a part of the show in its fifth season. (Johar’s talk show made its debut in 2004). His team requested my team for months for my dates.

But what is pertinent here is: why is Karan Johar trying to shame a woman for being a woman? What is this about the ‘woman card’ and the ‘victim card’? This kind of talk is demeaning to all women, particularly the vulnerable because they are the ones who really need to use them. The ‘woman card’ might not help you become a Wimbledon champ, or win you Olympic medals, or bag National awards. It might not even land you a job, but it can get a pregnant woman who feels her water is about to break a ‘ladies’ seat on a crowded bus. It can be used as a cry for help when you sense a threat. The same goes for the ‘victim card’, which women like my sister, Rangoli, who is a victim of an acid attack, can use while fighting for justice in court.

I use every card possible. At the workplace, it’s the badass card to fight cutthroat competition. With my family and loved ones, it’s the love card. When fighting the world, it’s the dignity card, and for a seat in a bus, it’s the woman card. What is important to understand is that we are not fighting people, we are fighting a mentality. I am not fighting Karan Johar, I am fighting male chauvinism.

Now that Karan is the father of a little daughter (Johar became a single parent of twins, who were born through surrogacy last month), he should provide her with all these cards — the ‘woman card’ and the ‘victim card’, as also the ‘self-made-independent-woman card’, and the ‘badass card’ that I flashed on his show. We will use whatever we need to ensure no one rocks our boat.

I’m also a little surprised at the “graciousness” he says he displayed in choosing to not edit the jousty bits on the show. While I’d have blacklisted the channel if something like that had happened, let’s also remember that a channel wants TRPs, and he is just a paid host.

Also, the Indian film industry is not a small studio given to Karan by his father when he was in his early 20s. That is just a small molecule. The industry belongs to every Indian and is highly recommended for outsiders like me whose parents were too poor to give me a formal training. I learnt on the job and got paid for it, using the money to educate myself in New York. He is nobody to tell me to leave it. I’m definitely not going anywhere, Mr Johar.”

WILL BADRINATH KI DULHANIA BE 1ST GENUINE SUPER HIT OF 2017?

The first 2 months of 2017 have been better than 2016 and 2015 as we’ve had 3 successful films – Raees, Kaabil and Jolly LLB 2. None of the three are blockbusters but did decent business. But Badrinath Ki Dulhania might turn out to be the first genuine hit of 2017 as everything is falling in place for this film!

Badrinath Ki Dulhania is the second part of the Dulhania franchise, the first part of which was Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. Like the predecessor, this movie also stars Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt, directed by Shashank Khaitan and produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions. From the trailer, it seems that story-wise, it’s nothing new but can turn out to be a decent entertainer. The fun moments are aplenty and Tamma Tamma’s reworked version has worked well. It has got a wide release and moreover, it has a 4-day weekend (Monday March 13 is holiday on account of Holi). And this is a film that can get viewers in hordes as it seems rooted. Many films off late have been quite urban which doesn’t work on an all-India level. Badrinath Ki Dulhania on the other hand seems like a desi entertainer. Hence, it can surely excel at the box office, especially if the reports are nice.

Om Puri taught me that ‘life ko complicated mat banao’-Govind Namdev

The very talented Govind Namdev surprised audiences as he featured in a public awareness ad called Hawa Badlo that motivates citizen to give a helping hand to the traffic policemen, who are facing numerous health hazards. Namdev speaks about this initiative, why his upcoming film Coming Back Darling is one of its kind Hindi film and don’t miss as he opens up about his association with Om Puri who passed away on January 6 this year.

You were recently seen in a public initiative ad called Hawa Badlo. How did you become a part of it?
The makers say that they contacted me because they liked the genuineness in my personality. Also, it’s the need of hour to prevent the air pollution from impacting our health. Hence, they asked prominent, popular actors so that the message can spread far and wide.

Towards the end of Hawa Badlo, some statistics are shared about the health of the traffic policemen. What was your reaction on going through it? Were you aware that so many cops complain of thick sputum, joint pain etc?
I knew little bit but later, they told us in detail as to how their health gets affected and by the time they realize, it’s too late. But I am happy with the feedback and to see that people are trying to be more aware of the dangers of air pollution.

Talking about you films, I believe you are doing Lekh Tandon’s film Phir Usi Mod Par…
Yes and recently, I worked on a film called Coming Back Darling. It’s a romantic thriller and a murder mystery, featuring Arbaaz Khan in a double role. I play a cop. We had a start-to-finish schedule in Switzerland. The experience was great. Bahut hi kamaal ka shoot hua hai. The whole place was covered with snow. Hence, the look of the film is quite appealing. I don’t think any other Hindi film has been shown in Switzerland from start to finish and that too especially when it’s snowing throughout. Normally, only a part of the film or a song gets filmed in Switzerland. But Coming Back Darling is an exception. It is directed by Chandrakant Singh and is definitely a film that would be loved.

When will this film release?
Initially, they were planning for a June release but now, the plan is to release in September.

What’s the update about Solar Eclipse: Depth Of Darkness, in which you play Morarji Desai and Dr Parchure?
It is ready but the film’s release has got a bit delayed. The reports of the film are very positive.

You had a long association with Om Puri, who passed away earlier this year. How do you look back at this very talented performer and what memories do you have of him?
He was my senior in NSD (National School of Drama). When I first came to Mumbai, it was he who treated me like his younger brother. He guided me how to present myself in front of people. At the beginning, he gave me an important lesson which I remember till date and that is‘Sachhe bane rehna’ (Be truthful). Dishonesty, lies will ruin your personality. He was quite an honest, genuine person. The first play I did in Mumbai was with him in the late 80s. It was called Rustom Sohrab. He played Rustom while Karan Razdan played the role of Sohrad. The role of Sohrab’s mother was essayed by Nadira Babbar. I played the role of the senapati and I composed sword fighting. Bada zabardast experience tha!

Some people are not destined for a settled, family life. Om Puri was sadly one of them. In the last few years, we worked together in a lot of films like Dirty Politics, Solar Eclipse: Depth Of Darkness, Project Marathwada, Khap etc. Then we did a fine film in 2009 called Baabarr. He was also there in my debut film, Antaheen (1986). It was directed by Dinesh Lakhanpal, a FTII graduate. I did a film with him called Bolo Raam. We shot the whole film in Lonavala. We were there for 15 days and our respective families also joined. It was lovely. Later, we were so close that we would be meeting every now and then. Mile bagair hum reh nahin paate the!

Last year, he was heavily criticized for his comments on the martyred soldier. However, he was quick to apologize
That was a mistake on his part although his intention was not to mock anyone. This was the time when he became too dependent on alcohol. In an inebriated condition, he used to end up saying something contrary to what he wanted to say. Sadly, his image got a beating especially with the said episode.

But he was quick to apologize and he also went and met the deceased’s family member. That was quite praiseworthy.
Yes and that’s because he was a genuine person and this proves it. In the end, he taught me that ‘life ko complicated mat banao’. This I guessed stemmed from his personal experience. Life should be simple. Don’t have too many possessions. You need not possess everything. You can lead a comfortable life even without lot of material possessions. Why overburden life? He wasn’t compatible with one woman so he married another. And then he went back to his first wife. This led to a lot of complications in his life and also, he became quite lonely at the end.

Coming back to Hawa Badlo, the other actors in that film – Vivek Oberoi, Swara Bhaskar, Kalki Koechlin, Vir Das – are all quite active on Twitter which helps them to further spread the message. Do you have any plans of joining social media in the near future? A lot of people don’t know the real Govind Namdev after all…
Yes, I plan to come on Twitter and Facebook very soon. As Om Puri told me, ‘life ko complicated mat banao’! That’s a big reason why I don’t go off track. Idhar udhar haath nahin daalta main. I don’t need to read and I am not answerable to anyone at present. The idea is that I should be focused on my work. So I am content at interacting with people via SMS, WhatsApp etc. At the same time, I understand that I can’t be so aloof. Look at Mr Amitabh Bachchan. He balances his work and interactions with fan online so well. If he can do, I can also try. I won’t be as active as him but can surely give it a shot!

NCP’s Jitendra Awhad threatens Ram Gopal Varma of violence; RGV gives it back and how!

It’s fairly common for members of the Bollywood fraternity to chicken out when any politician/minister/so-called social-cultural activist tries to create problems for them. In January 2017, when Sanjay Leela Bhansali was assaulted by members of Sri Rajput Karni Sena in Jaipur, the filmmaker left Rajasthan, announced that he’ll abide by their demands and filed no FIR against the Sena. Karan Johar had to unfortunately bow down while trying to get a peaceful release of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, that featured Fawad Khan. It was Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena that created problems by publicly threatening him. The Shah Rukh Khan starrer Raees was also in their ‘hit list’ since it starred Mahira Khan. SRK in fact had to come down to Thackeray’s residence in order to ensure his film can release smoothly. At such times when there’s so much fear among Bollywood members, it’s heartening to see a filmmaker trolling a politician, for a change! The filmmaker is none other than the eccentric Ram Gopal Varma. It all started with his tweet on Sunny Leone on Women’s Day.
As expected, it led to loads of brouhaha. The contents of the tweet were definitely objectionable. However, RGV won hearts later on when Jitendra Awhad of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) publicly threatened him. He ordered RGV to apologize or face ‘dire consequences’. He also added he won’t mind ‘taking law into his hands’, a clear indication that he was threatening RGV of violence. But Ram Gopal Varma is not like other members of Bollywood. He gave it back to Jitendra Awhad. At first, he simply posted a smiley to mock him.
He then tweeted that Sharad Pawar, founder of NCP, should oust him from the party for making such a comment. He also added that he was a disgrace to the ideals of Sharad Pawar. In the next tweet, he turned the tables on Jitendra. Now RGV threatened him, of a police complaint, if he doesn’t apologize to him for his threat tweet.

Jitendra however didn’t bow down and told RGV to ‘go ahead’
Ram Gopal Varma then gave out his address and said that Jitendra is free to come over there and ‘take law into his hands’.
He then brought out a 6 month old video where Arnab Goswami had blasted Jitendra Awhad on his popular show ‘Newshour’ on Times Now news channel.
Finally, RGV posted the screenshot of the bio of Jitendra Awhad’s Twitter handle that reads: Right or Wrong i express wat i feel. He posted 2 tweets where he mocked Jitendra and even called him a ‘joker’. Jitendra didn’t reply to these tweets at all. He merely tried to show his victory by retweeting tweets of those who supported him

What RGV posted about Sunny Leone was definitely not acceptable. But it was good to see a filmmaker finally giving it back to a politician in a language he knows best. Our filmmakers and actors definitely have a lot to learn from this filmmaker!

Sanyukta Iyer (MUMBAI MIRROR; March 10, 2017)

Actor-singer Ayushmann Khurrana is turning producer with wife Tahira Kashyap directorial debut, a short film titled Toffee. Ayushmann will be co-producing the film with casting director Mukesh Chhabra.

Set in the nineties, the story follows two girls around the age of 11 who chase a conspiracy theory prevailing in Punjab at the time. The 15-minute film has been shot in Basti Sheikh, a small town in Jalandhar, in guerrilla style by DoP Vivek Shah.

Raving over his wife, Ayushmann told Mirror, “Tahira who is already an author, has written a really good script, one that deserves to be seen by people. She’s written scripts for our theatre group and has directed plays before and its time she directed a film now. Despite being a short film, Toffee, will have the look and feel of a feature film.”

The debutant director admits that she’d have loved to have her husband act in the film too but the story did not allow that. “It’s about two young girls. I know Ayushmann loves challenges, but this would have been too big a challenge,” Tahira laughs, admitting that the first time Ayushmann told her that he loved the script, she didn’t believe him. “Both of us are extremely critical of each other’s work. So when he said that he loved it, I actually asked him to repeat it again.”

Tahira points out that even though she liked the way the characters she scripted unfolded on stage in her plays, she never imagined that one day she would actually direct a film. It was only recently that she focussed all her thoughts and actions into directing a short. “I want to direct a full-length feature film some day too, but I need to earn that opportunity. I am confident, I will in due time, with experience and validation,” she signs off with a smile.

MUMBAI MIRROR (March 10, 2017)

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma who courted trouble for his unsavoury International Women’s Day tweets on former adult entertainer Sunny Leone apologised for them on Thursday at 7.40 pm. He was quick to say that “the apology is only to those who genuinely got offended and not to those who ranted for publicity and threatened to take the law into their hands”. He went on to say that he was just expressing his feelings “but I apologise to all who were offended due to my unintended insensitive tweets in context of women’s day.”

In a tweet on Wednesday RGV had posted, “I wish all the women in the world give men as much happiness as Sunny Leone gives.” He was trolled and as the row snowballed, he said, “The negative noise towards my tweet on Sunny Leone arises from ultimate hypocrisy. She has more honesty and more selfrespect than any women.”

Nationalist Congress Party leader, Jitendra Awhad lashed out, saying, “RGV apologise or face the consequences. We don’t mind taking the law in hand.” He responded saying that NCP President Sharad Pawar “should kick you out for threatening to take law in hands in our sovereign democratic country. You are a disgrace to his ideals.” Awhad warned that if RGV didn’t apologise, he’d lodge a police complaint.

On Wednesday, social activist Vishakha Mhabrey filed a police complaint in Goa, demanding his Twitter account be blocked and an offense be registered against him under the cyber laws and the Indian Penal Code for victimisation of women. The filmmaker retorted that he was filing a counter complaint against the activist who has just “212 followers which would be her family and friends”, for disrespecting Sunny’s 18 lakh followers.

The row escalated with NCP spokesperson Vidya Chavan warning that if he didn’t apologise, they’d launch a ‘Joote Maro Andolan” and beat him up with footwear. The Film Studio Setting & Allied Mazdoor Union, with over 50,000 members, starting a ‘boycott of RGV’ while Prateeksha Korgaonkar, state convenor of Ranaragini, the women’s wing of the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti in Goa, filed a complaint with the Goa State Women’s Commission. Buzz was, the Sarkar 3 climax shoot in Mumbai’s Film City studio had come to a halt following violent protests. When Mirror reached out to RGV on this he said, “Not true, Sarkar shoot got over a month ago.”

Amitabh Bachchan to lend his voice for opening sequence of the Vidya Balan-starrer Begum Jaan

Amitabh Bachchan has lent his voice to National Award winning director Srijit Mukherji’s Bollywood directorial debut Begum Jaan. The opening sequence of the period drama which unfolds soon after the Partition, will have him introduce the theme.

While Big B has earlier done voiceovers for films like Satyajit Ray’s Shatranj Ke Khiladi, Ashutosh Gowarikar’s Lagaan and more recently Hindi-Telugu bilingual The Ghazi Attack, he has never collaborated with the Bhatts before.

Producer Mahesh Bhatt told Mirror, “It’s very generous of Mr Bachchan to give his time and attention to this significant film coming from the banner. It’s an unusual creation by Srijit and his voice sets the tone and context for the film which deals with the birth of our nation. It’s a painful chapter in our history and of our nation and Srijit wished for Mr Bachchan do the voiceover and my brother Mukesh was prompt in giving expression to Srijit’s desire. The manner in which Mr Bachchan has spoken the important and poignant words is a precursor to this emotionally powerful film.”

Begum Jaan which toplines Vidya Balan, is the Hindi adaptation of Srijit’s Bengali film, Rajkahini, which follows the Bengal Partition through the newlydrawn LoC between India and East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) which runs right through a brothel which houses 11 women.

Given the subject and the profession the women are in, the film, Bhatt admits, has a few cuss words. But despite this it had an unusually smooth encounter with the Censor Board. “They were overwhelmed by the content and surprisingly supportive because they felt the film had integrity and its heart was in the right place. We had to do away with a few expletives, in two places the words were changed keeping them close to the originals, but otherwise they did not tamper with the film. It was one of our rarest of rare encounters with the CBFC,” he signed off.

MEANWHILE...Vidya Balan moves like Madhuri Dixit on Kapil Sharma's comedy show

On Kapil Sharma’s comedy show Vidya Balan, requested her Begum Jaan costar Ila Arun to croon her Khal Nayak charttopper, “Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai” and replicated Madhuri Dixit’s bosomheaving moves.

A source reveals, “When the subject of “Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai” came up, Ila turned emotional, saying that while it’s often dismissed as a vulgar song the lyrics conveys the importance of a woman’s heart. Impressed Vidya broke into the jig.”
