Avinash Lohana (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 13, 2015)

Sonam Kapoor sure is living out of a suitcase these days.

After a photo shoot in Los Angeles last month, the Prem Ratan Dhan Payo actress returned to Mumbai for the trailer launch of her new film, before taking off for San Francisco the same night to attend a fundraiser. Then, on Friday, the 30-year-old fashionista rounded off her gal pals, including younger sister Rhea Kapoor, for a weekend getaway in Goa.

"Sonam has been looking for a break from her hectic schedule for a while now. That's the reason behind the impromptu vacation with her gang - Rhea, designer Shehla Khan and Karishma Karamchandani," Sonam's friend informs. They spent most of their time cooped up in a luxurious South Goa resort before returning to Mumbai on Sunday night. Now, its back to work as usual.

Sanyukta Iyer (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 13, 2015)

From clicking selfies with Prime Minister John Key to jumping off a 300-meter building in an orange jumpsuit, Sidharth Malhotra, who was recently appointed New Zealand's Tourism Ambassador for India, is clearly enjoying the perks of his latest title. Not to mention the brand new rugby jersey of the All Blacks national team that he plans to show off now that he's back in Mumbai.

"My trip has been a mix of adventure sports and sightseeing," the actor tweeted from Wellington. "But the highlight was meeting the legendary Sir Richard Taylor at a Weta Workshop. Thanks for 'Frodo's ring' from The Lord of the Rings."

Sidharth was all ears when the five-time Oscar-winning make-up artist shared his views on filmmaking, prosthetics and visual effects, during their meeting on Monday. "Will you redo my face for my next film?" he requested the British artist.

The actor, who couldn't believe his eyes when Weta artists transformed him into an elf, with pointed ears like Orlando Bloom's in the LOTR movies, revealed that he would love to play Aragorn in the Hindi remake of the popular trilogy. "I was stunned when I looked at myself in the mirror. It was my best makeover till date," he admitted. "Now, I'm ready for a battle to save Middle-earth with my armour in place."

Ranbir Kapoor goes the Dev Anand way in Matargashti song in Tamasha

Matargashti
Joginder Tuteja (DNA; October 13, 2015)

In their heyday, Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand were peers as well as rivals. Now Ranbir, scion of the Kapoor clan, is paying homage to Dev saab in his own sweet manner. For his next film Tamasha, he has gone ahead and done an almost perfect impersonation of the late evergreen actor.

“This is for the song Matargashti,” confirms our source, “A fun number which is basically a Ranbir song all the way with Deepika accompanying him, it has Ranbir stepping into Dev saab's shoes (or rather cap) for a good part. His body language, facial expressions and mannerisms are truly in line with that of the legendary romantic hero and his jovial persona has also been kept intact.”

It didn’t just end here. The A R Rahman composed song even has lyrics by Irshad Kamil throwing more than just subtle hints around Dev Anand inspirations. So the words Dil Ka Bhanwar have been borrowed from the title song of Dev Anand’s classic Tere Ghar Ke Saamne while his Prem Pujari is being referred to as well.

So happy was producer Sajid Nadiadwala with the Mohit Chauhan sung song that he went ahead with a no-bar approach when it came to the presentation and grandeur, making it one of the biggest songs on play today.

When contacted, filmmaker Imtiaz Ali was happy to talk about the homage. He says, “The great personalities from cinema are a part of our upbringing and influence is just like a close friend or family member. We admire them, emulate them and they spring out from within us when we are happy — like in Matargashti.”

Well, now here’s is looking forward to all the happiness which is expected to be on play with Tamasha.

Stop the strike and give me a chance-Gajendra Chauhan

FTII Chairman, Gajendra Chauhan, who has never been to the institute ever
Sanyukta Iyer (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 13, 2015)

Four months since his controversial appointment as the chairman of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), BJP member and TV personality Gajendra Chauhan is yet to visit his office.

An RTI query by Mumbai-based activist Anil Galgali revealed on Monday that while the FTII list of appointments to the post shows the tenure as March 4, 2014 to March 3, 2017, Chauhan was appointed on June 9, 2015. "He has not yet visited the FTII office to take charge or meet with officials and students. The institute remains virtually headless and mired in avoidable controversies," Galgali said in a statement.

Hawaizaada writer-director Vibhu Puri, whose 2006 short film Chabiwali Pocket Watch was produced by the FTII, told Mirror, "This RTI reveals nothing new. Chauhan has never attended the institute, taught a class or addressed a seminar ever, let alone in the last one year. My heart bleeds for the students whose academics are suffering."

Interestingly, the last FTII Chairperson, actor and former BJP Union Minister Vinod Khanna, who served two terms, dropped by only twice, once in each term. "He was not the best candidate either, but at least he had a worldview and a good body of work," Vibhu, who was a student during Khanna's tenure, reasons.

Another former student, Sayani Gupta, who was last seen in Shonali Bose's Margarita, With a Straw, notes, "Only 40-50 students from all over the country are accepted into this prestigious institute, since the entrance process is rigorous. Chauhan would have never made it as a student."

Chauhan remains unfazed by all the criticism. "The strike began three days after my appointment and I have repeatedly asked for a chance, since then. I will do everything in my power for the students' welfare because I realise the importance of education. I have children too and a degree in Para Medicine from the All India Institute Of Medical Science, so I understand the system," he asserted.

In the past, BJP MP Pawan Chopra, who had the shortest term (of three months) as a chairperson, visited the FTII office only once, that too on the final day of his tenure. The students have effectively questioned the appointment and selection process over the years and constantly demanded answers from the I&B Ministry, but this year, according to Sayani, the decision has been appalling.

"Chauhan claims that the students are not giving him a single chance, but no one is stopping him from coming to the campus and speaking to the students," she said.

The institute has seen dedicated chairmen like Saeed Mirza, who held the office for three years and showed up a record 20 times; Girish Karnad, who visited the institute six times in his one-year term and UR Ananthamurthy, who was appointed thrice and attended office 26 times in a period of eight years. "The finest included Shyam Benegal, Mrinal Sen and RK Laxman, who represented not only films, but the literary arts too," said Vibhu.

The RTI query had also sought information about the educational qualifications and other eligibility details for the Chairperson's position after the students had been on strike for over 100 days, with four meetings between them and officials of the I&B ministry being inconclusive. They are tentatively scheduled to meet I&B Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, in New Delhi next Tuesday.

"The only ones suffering from this strike are the students themselves; they don't want to sit across the table and talk it out. They want answers from their Government. If they end this strike, academics can begin," Chauhan concluded.

Rajshri's cinema is so pure that it will never be outdated-Neil Nitin Mukesh

Renuka Vyavahare (BOMBAY TIMES; October 13, 2015)

Modest, humble and well-spoken, Neil Nitin Mukesh has been roped in by Sooraj Barjatya to play a grey character in his forthcoming Salman Khan-starrer Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (PRDP), but in real life, Neil embodies the good old values of a quintessential Rajshri hero to the T. Excerpts from a chat...

Prem Ratan Dhan Payo is your first film with Rajshri Productions. Going by their sensibilities, who among the cast was the most gharelu on set?
The director and captain of the ship, Soorajji, is the most gharelu. On the first day of my shoot, I just couldn't believe that this is the kind of atmosphere in a Sooraj Barjatya film. There's so much peace, no noise or no extra shouting around. In my career, right from a child actor to an assistant director and then a lead actor, I have done various films and gone through the rigmarole of working with directors who have been extremely temperamental. Coming from there and getting into a Barjatya film was a completely new experience. Initially, I was very confused, wondering if Soorajji was liking my work or not because he would never say anything. There was never a shout or a scream. He would just nod or smile. The smile would be there even if he was upset about work not going his way. I think what I learnt from him was the art of patience. Initially, I thought it was a lie, a façade, as it was too good to be true till I realised that actually we were the lies on his set because that's how his upbringing is. That's how his films reflect the values that are inculcated in him. Working with him has been a dream come true for me.

How was it playing a negative role in a Barjatya film?
Most of the characters that I have played are grey but not completely bad. Even Johnny (in Johnny Gaddaar) isn't bad. It's the situation that makes him do things. Soorajji approached me keeping that in mind. He judged me as an audience more than a director and that's when he offered me this role. My character in PRDP is a rebel with a cause. He's got a reason behind doing what he is doing. There is so much angst in him. He is the younger stepbrother (of Salman), who is rebellious. He's so layered. It's one of my most difficult characters as for roles like these, you have to make sure that your fellow onscreen characters hate you but your audience relates to you, understands you and falls in love with you. To strike that balance is the most difficult thing.

You were 12 years old when you saw Hum Aapke Hain Koun (1994).
I was 12 and on our insistence, my mother bought us three tickets for HAHK in black for Rs 1,500, which was really unaffordable back then. My dad was travelling abroad for shows at that time. My mom was given a monthly expenditure (Iss mahine ka kharcha itna. Uss samay Rs 1,500 picture ke liye kharch karna bahut badi baat thi). She still bought those tickets to not disappoint us. On our way back home, she said to me in the taxi, 'I know you hope to become an actor, so I am hoping that one day you work with these guys (Rajshri). These are the kind of films you are supposed to be doing.'

Were you apprehensive that Rajshri's 'melodramatic family template' may seem dated for today's audience?
Not at all. In fact, I feel it's a major clutter breaker. Unfortunately in our cinema, if we have one hit film, people tend to follow that pattern for the next 10 films. Rajshri designs their pattern. Their cinema is their cinema. When you are entering their world, you are very aware of doing so. The risk you take is a very calculated risk as you know you want to be a part of their world. For me, their cinema is so pure that it will never be outdated. I tell this to everybody I meet. How much money does it cost to buy happiness? You can't. Maybe a guy having bhel puri on the road would be happier than me sitting in a restaurant having a seven-course meal. Similarly, happiness is something that all of us want and Soorajji's films teach you that. They open your eyes and show that there is more to life than just running behind something that might not make you happy. I've done a lot of thrillers in my life but I am the biggest sucker for love stories and family dramas. That is what Indian cinema has always revolved around.

You recently spoke about imitating Salman Khan on the set of PRDP. Did you try imitating the leading lady Sonam Kapoor as well?
I have worked with Sonam in Players before. This is our second film together. She has a lovely sense of humour, but you have to be careful sometimes. You have to know her mood and analyse her. When she is happy and you mimic around, she will take it sportingly, but otherwise you have to be careful.

Both you and Salman are close to your families. Was this a perfect amalgamation of people coming together in a film that propagates family values?
We are Indians. We are raised with great family values. Our culture is such and somewhere our films reflect that. However, films are also a medium that breaks the norms and transports you into a world or a space which is make-believe. It could be a genre like Johnny Gaddaar, so I might not be like the person I portray onscreen but films are art and at the end of the day, it's my bread and butter. I have to do it. PRDP is the first film that comes close to probably what my culture or upbringing really is.

In an ensemble cast (like PRDP), everyone must have a different style of working. How did you hit the right note?
Luckily for me, I started my career with an ensemble cast in Johnny Gaddaar, followed by Players and New York. So I have the experience. The best you can do is not get bothered about anybody. Irrespective of what people say to you. Just hear it and leave it. Do what you believe in because it's easier to advise than to follow and filmmaking is a craft where you don't shoot linear. It is non linear, so you are the only person who's actually keeping a tab on your character from start to end. There are many gyaanis, who share their gyaan. At the end of the day, you should know what you want to do with your character.

24 hours are still not enough-Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

Much has changed for Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, post marriage, motherhood and now Jazbaa. The actor muses about it...
Upala KBR (DNA; October 13, 2015)

I last met Aishwarya Rai Bachchan before her marriage. To me, she was Ash then — bright, caring, confident and very down-to-earth. We have cried, shared gossip (and misunderstandings), advice (Ash is one of the most practical, intelligent actresses I know and a sensible advice-giver too) and exchanged notes on various issues from her roles to actresses not getting paid as much as big actors. ARB (as she’s known today) had done then what no actress would've dared to — ask for a consideration from the international overflow of profits from the film Mangal Pandey from Aamir Khan. It’s now 2015 and Ash’s film post marriage and motherhood, Jazbaa just released last week. This time, though I am meeting her as the Bachchan bahu and as a mother, our meeting is as warm as ever. Time is short (she’s doing another interview post mine), but then with Ash, time is always running ahead of her. I guess she manages to fit in an incredible amount of work in a short time, because she’s one of the most organised persons I've met. Over to ARB...

What’s your average day like?
Like any other woman’s normal day. You've known me for years; you know my day better than anyone!

When I knew you, you were single...
And then marriage and motherhood happened and with it came multi-tasking... So much changes after marriage, no? Before my marriage, I used to tell you that 24 hours a day are too few for me. But with marriage and motherhood. it’s the same thing — 24 hours are still not enough. But then, for sure, I have realised with experience, that, we as women have an amazing capacity to multi-task. With every phase of my life, I have managed to pack in that much more. You know me, nothing is in half-measures. I only take on in my life as much as I can, whatever that may be with absolute commitment. I give of myself whole-heartedly. That’s the key to my being and when I look around I am not the only one. Every working woman in their lives every day has the capacity to multi-task. Our capacity to multi-task is immense, which means our capacity is immense. It’s empowering to realise and recognise that.

You chose Sanjay Gupta’s Jazbaa as your first film post marriage and motherhood. You could've taken your pick from Aditya Chopra, Karan Johar...
It’s a subject that actors would gravitate towards and would be happy to do. One would be interested in working with the co-actors, like Irrfan, Atul (Kulkarni), Chandan (Roy Sanyal) and Shabanaji (Azmi), that I was getting the opportunity to work with. To work with a team of actors in a narrative like this, you know that there’s going to be an incredible commitment and integrity creatively every day. That’s fun and inspiring. You know me long enough and you know what I look for. I would grab an opportunity like this. I seek work, which can be creatively satisfying every day, and that happened with Jazbaa. To do this with Sanjay Gupta was a unique, exciting and intriguing combination. It’s nice to be curious and be surprised because one didn’t know how this combination was going to eventually roll out. Jazbaa’s not a predictable narrative. About the mother bit, I knew we were shooting in Mumbai, that’s all I considered.

Did the fact that you would be playing a mother also convince you to accept the part?
No. Yes, I am more equipped to play a mother’s part with my personal experience, but it’s also about being a socially responsible woman. When you see mine and Shabana’s parts and the things that we are talking about in this film… It’s a thriller and it’s also about the goings-on in society and each one’s take on it and what people go through in each given situation. That’s what drew me to the subject. These things need to be spoken about in a variety of films without bracketing them into genres — films for people to see, talk and think about. Thereby, it’s topical and hence, the excitement to do the film. If I was offered this film five years ago as an actress, I would have loved to do it. I would have played a mother according to what I would have imagined it to be and interpreted it according to what Sanjay or the script dictated and take it from there. But today, I know there is the honesty of experience and hence my nuances come from a very real core. We always say for actors experience is the best tool to be equipped with and I recognised that while playing Anuradha Varma in Jazbaa. As a working mother challenged with such a situation, I wouldn’t wish it upon any human being and what she goes through, but yes, being a mother definitely was a plus. Of course, it wasn’t pre-planned in that context.

Did you miss Aaradhya while shooting for Jazbaa?
Interestingly, the way I planned it and today in hindsight, I am so glad that Jazbaa is the movie that I chose because of the pace at which we did the film. As I was doing the film I realised that of course, Sanjay is also a father of a four and two-year-old so there are so many things that could be said unsaid. Also, because of the way we timed our days — when I would ask him if I could start early and come on the sets from home after getting ready as I wanted to drop my daughter off to school every day — he would plan the day accordingly. If there were days he couldn’t plan it, he would ask me to come early. We could work it out and that worked perfectly for me because once I am on the sets I am fully committed to my work. I don’t like bringing my personal life to work or to the director. And with Aaradhya’s growth spurt also, she has very naturally embraced all this so I have found my balance because she has found her balance — of how a working mother works, how her day rolls, how I drop her to school myself. I go for my shoot and then after pickup she joins me so that little drive where she wants to have her nap while travelling... then she’s with me in my trailer. Very often there were day shoots and in the evening she would be with me as we would be going back together. I had arranged for my dinner and home-cooked meals so everything was sorted and we were together throughout the making of the film. I am glad because she is going to be almost four now in November and she’s understood the dynamics of a working mother. And I thank God for that because I hadn’t probably foreseen all this. Every day for me was the first. I have never had kids before, so I don’t know how it’s going to roll out… I am learning every day and obviously trying to commit to giving all of myself every day. That is more important because it’s all still new. I know my professional turf and wrap myself around whatever surprises that situation might give.

You are like the female Aamir Khan — very selective about scripts — and directors are known to  change their scripts for you. Did you get Sanjay Gupta to change his?
It’s wonderful to be able to contribute the way directors have always allowed me to. I have always done that since the beginning and acknowledge that. Most filmmakers till date have given me that liberty, indulged me, allowed me or just accorded me that mutual respect. It is respectful to allow people to share their opinions. It’s wonderful that I have enjoyed that relationship and I have been allowed that opportunity. I will give my creative viewpoint because it’s never about me individually. My opinions will be about everything — script, parts of the story and my directors recognise that. I must admit that Sanjay has been wonderful about it, too. Sanjay has been superlative in allowing for that. Sanjay is also Abhishek’s friend and my husband would jokingly tell him, ‘Gups you have always dealt with guys in testestrone-filled movies and we know the dudes you have been working with,’ but I told Abhishek that I would have an opinion and brainstorm creatively and constantly. So Abhishek would tell me that it would be interesting to see Gups and me on that turf. And after every schedule I would tell Abhishek that you will be surprised. And he would be surprised that there were no fireworks. I said nothing because Gups is open-minded, he has no ego hassles, is totally cool about suggestions, if he sees the sense in it, he’s totally on board and that has been great for Irrfan, Shabanaji and me as everybody has an opinion. The exercise felt natural.

Your last release was Guzaarish five years ago. Tell us about the Jazbaa journey. What has changed in Bollywood?
I know everybody keeps telling me that so much has changed in these five years, but honestly? This change was already happening. There has been a bigger spurt in social media, a lot more communications and websites, reviews and critics… It’s all more digital, not so much prints, exhibitions have increased a lot more these last years, the kinds of recovering opportunities for films have been immense, so I feel it has creatively liberated filmmakers and writers.

The script is the king…
Yes. It was always was... in our hearts. We wanted and were trying for it, but I guess it’s all cyclic... if the returns allow for it the investors find the confidence to allow the creative people to find their expression. Logically, no film can be a flop because you can the subject make within a controlled budget. Gups said that with Jazbaa we are home because of the way it was planned and the deals made. So, when you know you are secure, you make your subject accordingly. Certain films are expensive because of that genre, but then people will invest accordingly. Today, the BO business is more transparent with the audiences than it used to be. Hence, there’s a larger sense of security and it’s exciting for us all creatively because it just means more subjects and stories can be told. Koi darr nahi. Plan your budget, make it and your film will be a success. The world has opened up so many different territories and markets. With corporatisation people have recognised these opportunities and that has grown at an incredible pace in the last decade and possibly more in the last five years. I have not gone anywhere. I have always been aware of it and I know exactly what’s happening! (Laughs)

Sonali Joshi Pitale (MID-DAY; October 14, 2015)

As Priyanka Chopra continues to juggle work in India and abroad, working out dates is a task, not only for her but the film crews too. So, when the actress flew into Mumbai from Montreal (where she is shooting for American TV series, Quantico) for her last schedule of Bajirao Mastani, she did something special to express her gratitude to the team — a lavish lunch awaited them as soon as the shoot wrapped up.

A source says, “Priyanka landed in the city on Friday for a three-day schedule. She shot her last scene on Monday and once it was time to pack up, she thanked the crew for adjusting to her crazy schedule by treating them to lunch.”

Another reason for the treat was that she is overjoyed with the response to Quantico where she plays one of the main leads. “Since Priyanka was shooting in Wai in Satara district, she entrusted her brother Siddharth, a restaurateur, with the responsibility of arranging lunch on the set for 200-odd people. The menu comprised Italian food, authentic Indian dishes and some barbequed snacks on the side,” adds the source. The actress’ spokesperson confirms the news.

On Monday night, Priyanka posted on her Instagram page: “And it’s a film wrap! Being a part of # BajiraoMastani is a milestone in my life! Thank you Sanjay Sir for being a dream. Thank you team. Left a part of me behind (sic).”

Ajay Devgn's chopper forced to turn around after five lakh fans go berserk at Bihar Sharif

Sanyukta Iyer (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 14, 2015)

Blaring loudspeakers were drowned out by cheers of five lakh people who had gathered at Bihar Sharif to catch a glimpse of Ajay Devgn on Monday morning. The actor, who has been campaigning for NDA in Jamui, Lakhisarai and Nawada districts in Bihar, was supposed to attend two rallies — at Bihar Sharif and in the Nalanda district respectively — to canvass for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Sunil Kumar. He was supposed to land near the rally site in a chopper after he arrived in Patna. But the plan was hit for a six following safety concerns.

The Superintendent of Police, Vivekanand Kumar, said, "A huge crowd had gathered at the ground and it was difficult for 200 policemen to control it. The police had to resort to lathi charge when the crowd started throwing chairs and pelting stones; at least a dozen people, including some policemen, were injured in the scuffle. That's when we asked the actor to turn his chopper around."

Ajay, who had to make do with waving at the crowd from his chopper, points out that earlier on October 8, he had visited Bihar to campaign and had successfully attended five rallies. "It had gone off well and the crowd was manageable then. But this time, the crowd had magnified and was difficult to control," he rues.

Fans of the Drishyam star chanted his name and mouthed lines from his hit films. Videos of people climbing buildings and trees, disrupting the rally site and standing on top of cars to get a glimpse of Ajay and how he was whisked off the site, went viral around 3 pm.

"#BiharLovesAjayDevgn" began trending on Twitter and the actor who has maintained a safe distance from social media, took to the microblogging site to share a post in Hindi, "Aaj Bihar Sharif aur Nalanda main pahunch nahin paane ke liye maafi. Because of the uncontrollable crowd, the officials did not give me permission to land."

Ajay, who had visited Bihar in 2012 to promote his film Son of Sadaar, told Mirror, "Incidents of murder, kidnapping and looting in daylight used to be rampant in Bihar then. I learnt about such incidents through my films, Gangaajal and Apaharan. That's what prompted me to join the campaign. I want to make a difference in the state."

So when BJP President, Amit Shah, reached out to him 15 days ago, the actor immediately agreed to be a part of their campaign trail, even though he has absolutely no intentions of foraying into politics anytime soon.

Ajay, who begins prepping for his home production, Shivaay, next week which rolls in Landour, Mussoorie, in November, headed to the Mahalakshmi temple in Kolhapur to bring in Navratri on Tuesday.

Slipper hurled at Ajay Devgn while campaigning in Bihar?

Ajay Devgn
Subhash K Jha (DNA; October 14, 2015)

There is a difference between playing a political leader in Prakash Jha’s Raajneeti and trying to get the crowds to listen to him in Bihar.

Superstar Ajay Devgn learnt this the hard way, when on Friday a chappal was hurled at Devgn’s cavalcade as it made its way to a political rally in Lakhisarai.

Devgan had been invited to the state on Friday by the BJP for a four-town tour in Jhajha, Parbatta, Rajauli and Lakhisarai.

The expectant crowds at the rally in Lakhisarai got restless and out of control. Devgn fled the rally without making his rehearsed speech. And soon flew back to Mumbai on a chopper.

A source from the BJP says, “It was wrong of them to ask Ajay to campaign for the Bihar elections. Ajay is not an orator. Nor is he comfortable with public interaction. What does he know about Bihar’s politics? One can’t just persuade stars to stand up and recommend candidates like that. It is unfair to them.”

One thing is for sure. We won’t see Devgn in Bihar in the near future unless friend Prakash Jha invites him to shoot for Raajneeti 2. And that’s unlikely because Jha never shoots any of his Bihar films in the state. More than anyone else, he knows how unruly excited mobs can get in the interiors of Bihar.

Deepika
She has the hottest body in the business. now Deepika Padukone shares her fitness mantra and the secret to getting a fit and fabulous figure
Upala KBR (DNA; October 14, 2015)

Deepika Padukone has a hot bod. Sure, she has an athletic frame but she has worked hard to achieve a shapely figure. She rarely misses a day at the gym. She is a role model to a lot of teenage girls. Even younger actresses like Alia Bhatt look up to her. Deepika shares her fitness secrets. And warns against starving and gimmicky stuff like six-pack abs.

Get athletic
Says the actress, “For me, fitness is part of my lifestyle. It’s not just something you do sometime. I come from a sports family, so I understand the importance of health and fitness as an athlete. It was a part of my growing-up years. My daily schedule consisted of waking up at 5.30 am and leaving for the badminton academy where I would play badminton for two hours after which the bus would drop me off home. I would have my breakfast and then leave for school. My dad being an athlete and mom being a fitness freak, I know how important it is to start your day with a workout. I play badminton as much as possible. An athletic lifestyle leads to a super shape!

Pilates is perfect
A couple of years ago, one day I looked at myself and my body in the mirror and felt that I could do so much better. I had signed Cocktail and I had to wear clothes that my character demanded. I wanted to feel 100 per cent confident while wearing those outfits. It was at that point of time that Yasmin (Karachiwala) came into my life and explained to me why doing pilates was so important to get the kind of body and level of fitness that I wanted. I have been hooked on pilates ever since. The kind of lifestyle I lead, I work 12-14 hours and day and get exhausted very quickly. Pilates opens up the body and I feel refreshed and energised after doing it. When I am not shooting I try and work out around six times a week. The beauty of pilates is that you never get tired of it. Like you do with other gym routines.

Don’t diet
I never diet nor do I follow any dietary restrictions. People misinterpret the concept of diet. You don’t get a fit-and-fab body by starving yourself. It’s all about understanding your body, how it reacts to certain foods and what it needs. I don’t control my food but eat everything —from coconut malai to rice. People think they put on weight when they eat rice, but I eat rice and even sweets but in moderate quantities.

Food reacts differently with different people. The trick is not to consume enough calories. Eat what your body needs and not what your eyes are eating. Yasmin always tells me to eat smart. The worst thing you can do to your body is to starve or do certain things like build six-pack abs in 10 days. Be as fit as possible but give your body that time to adapt. People want to lose 10 kg in two weeks. It’s not possible and not fair to your body. You risk injury and do immense harm to your body by doing such things.

Know yourself
Love your body and set realistic goals. Sometimes putting on weight can be beyond our control, including hormonal changes. Two years ago, I had put on 5 kgs. Instead of going on some drastic diet I accepted the fact that my body had undergone some changes due to some hormonal imbalances and started planning out my exercise routine. Everything fell into place after that.

I would sum it up as — know your body type, what to work on and always enjoy what you do. The secret of success is to enjoy what you do and feel good about it. Be fit because you deserve it.”

Vaani Kapoor and Aditya Chopra
Sonali Joshi Pitale (MID-DAY; October 14, 2015)

Days after signing Ranveer Singh for his next directorial venture, Befikre, YRF boss Aditya Chopra announced Vaani Kapoor as its heroine. The actress had vanished from the Bollywood scene after debuting in Shuddh Desi Romance (2013), and the news of her comeback had rumour mills working overtime.

We hear the actress wanted to step out of the YRF camp (her maiden outing hardly did anything to propel her career), but Aditya asked her to “ have patience” and eventually, offered her the lead role in Befikre. “Vaani was offered a few films by other production companies. She even had a good mind to sign one of them since it had been two years since her debut. She informed Aditya about her wish to take up work outside YRF, but he coaxed her to stay back,” reveals an industry insider.

The filmmaker then assured Vaani of a bigger break, says the source, adding, “That’s how she bagged the lead role.” After Shuddh Desi Romance, Vaani was seen in the Tamil remake of Band Baaja Baaraat (2010), also produced by Aditya.

Vaani's spokesperson, who also handles YRF talent management, dismisses the buzz and says, “Vaani, like all YRF talent, is free to sign other projects. There is no contract restricting them from doing so. The films she declined were out of free will since she was waiting for the right project to come along, whether from outside or within YRF.”

Avinash Lohana (MUMBAI MIRROR; October 14, 2015)

After getting 'dilwale' Shah Rukh Khan to romance his 'dulhania' Kajol, 20 years later in freezing Iceland, and making Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon dance to her tunes in Hyderabad's Ramoji Film City, Farah Khan is now choreographing a happy song featuring the entire Dilwale cast. "It kicked off on Sunday and is expected to wrap up by Friday. They are shooting mostly at night and everyone is having a jolly good time," informed a source from the sets.

Farah, who is a close friend of tennis ace Sania Mirza, visited her home in Hyderabad on Monday. They had lunch together and saw the repeat telecast of their favourite reality show, Bigg Boss 9. "When Farah landed for the night shoot, she was accompanied by Sania, who came bearing a gift - a potful of homemade biryani," adds the source.

Everyone relished the 'surprise', only SRK found it "untouchable". "What he meant was that no one should touch his favourite dish except him," explained the source with a laugh.

It was a night of laughs and a sporty Sania kept awake with the rest. In the morning she thanked Varun for the green tea, "Don't know what I would have done without it." Yawaawn!

There will only be one heroine in Sultan-Ali Abbas Zafar

Salman
Nayandeep Rakshit (DNA; October 14, 2015)

Come Eid 2016 and Salman Khan will be seen in yet another masala film, the eagerly awaited Sultan. There’s enormous hype around the film and around everything related to the film, it will also be clashing at the BO with Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees. Here’s everything you wanted to know about the film. Read on...

What
Salman will play Sultan, the ‘Sher of Haryana’, a wrestler on whom the film will be based. The actor has already started prepping for the role. Salman explains, “I will be bulkier than before. I play a wrestler who, later on, will do a lot of MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) in the film.”

When
Khan begins shooting on November 22. Director Ali Abbas Zafar reveals, “The film will be shot from mid-November to mid-March. There will be one full schedule only.”

Where
The team completed their recee months back. Says Ali, “The film will be shot in Delhi, Haryana and Mumbai.” There were also reports that to avoid similar locales, Aamir had requested the Sultan team to shoot somewhere else and that Salman had asked the team to build the sets in Mumbai. True? “The film will be shot in real-life locations. Only a few scenes will be shot indoors in Karjat. So no, this is not true,” Ali reasons.

Training
Salman also confirmed that he’s already started training for Sultan. “I uploaded a picture from my training session a few days ago. Don’t ask me, my whole body is paining. Arre baap re! Kahaan kahaan pain ho raha main kya batau (laughs). But these are the initial days. So hopefully in about a week or so, the pain will go.”

What it’s not
Not like Dangal: Says Ali, “Dangal is a biopic. My film majorly revolves around the character of Sultan. At heart, it’s a story of one character and it’s all about the fight within. Sultan is completely fictional, but inspiring at the same time.” Not like Abhimaan: Says the director, “I have been a huge fan of the film myself and I can assure you it’s not at all like Abhimaan.”

40, for sure!
Salman will play a 40-something. Moreover, adds our source, “Salman will put on and lose weight according to the demands of the script. His character will be caught within the same time frame, there’s no time lapse in the film like there is in Dangal, where Aamir plays both an 18-year-old as well as a 50-year-old.”

Two looks
With his age remaining the same throughout the film, Salman will instead sport two looks. Our khabroo informs us, “He will be muscular first and then he will get leaner.” Which portion are they shooting first? “All depends upon the action director. He will decide which portions to shoot first depending in which state Salman’s body is.”

Heroine kaun?
Ali keeps the speculation alive. “There will only be one heroine and we will announce it soon.” Also, as we had earlier exclusively told you, the heroine too needs to train in wrestling because the leading lady also is a wrestler in the film.

Acing Haryanvi
Says Ali, “Salman will learn Haryanvi and take training sessions to perfect the diction. There will be several Haryanvi dialogues in the film.”

No Rekha!
The grapevine was abuzz with news of Rekha playing Salman’s mother in the film. But Ali laughs it off. “There is no Rekha in the film.”

No villain?
An inspirational and aspirational story for the youth, there isn’t any prime antagonist in the film. Our source confirms the same. “As the catchline goes, the demons are within oneself. There won’t be anyone playing the antagonist in the film.”

Naach-gaana!
Ali affirms, “There will be songs and dances too. It’s a typical commercial film. But the film will have a lot of human emotions and a heart. It won’t just be a masala potboiler.”

Pratyusha Banerjee
Sonali Joshi Pitale (MID-DAY; October 15, 2015)

Infamous for tantrums on set, Pratyusha Banerjee allegedly walked off in a huff from the set of horror show Darr Sabko Lagta Hai. The television actress had been roped in to play the lead in an episode. However, before the camera could start rolling, she created a scene when asked to wear a revealing costume.

Says a crew member, “Pratyusha had allotted dates for the shoot and did a look test a few days ago. However, when she came on set and saw the costume, she refused to wear it and created a scene. It was a simple sleeveless top. Strangely, she agreed to wear it at first.” Those in the know say the production house tried to sort the matter, but the actress refused to budge. This, in turn, infuriated the crew.

A source says, “It was surprising as she was given a similar garment during the look test and she did not object to it. Though the production team tried its best to settle the matter, she walked out. We had no option but to cancel the shoot for the day and had to bear a loss of nearly Rs 30 lakh.”

Apparently, the producers have replaced her with Sonal Vengurlekar, who was last seen in Shastri Sisters. Pratyusha and producer Priti Sinha remained unavailable for comment. However, a source from the production house confirms the news.
