Producer Sajid Nadiadwala and his wife have had an interesting and unusual love story which has culminated into 14 years of marriage and two sons, Subhaan and Sufiyaan. She tells us why her love story with her husband is different as she celebrates their 14th wedding anniversary on November 18.
“It’s the norm usually that a boy chases the girl, but in our love story I chased him and his family. So, I can connect to the Tamasha tagline, Why always the same story. The film is very different like Sajid and my love story.
I met Sajid when I was a journalist and had gone to interview him. Eight years later we got married and it’s been 14 years since, but it still doesn’t feel that I am married to him. I still feel the same as I did 22 years ago.
I first met him on Divya Bharti’s first death anniversary when I was 16. One meeting and I knew he was the one. It took me eight years of hard work to make him fall in love with me. I used to find ways to meet him — stories, interviews or just land up on his shoot. I was obsessed with Sajid. I tried so hard to patao him that I would even take my articles to him. Sometimes, he would get irritated with me and tell his office staff to tell me he was out when actually he was there. Today, they call me bhabhi.
When his sister got married on April 2011, I became close to his family too. There was a vacuum in the house because she had left. Maine Sajid ki mummy ko bahut pataya tab. I became like Shah Rukh Khan in Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge and wooed his family.
Till then, Sajid and I were just friends. Later, that year, we got married. Sajid never proposed to me, I proposed to him. One day I told him on the phone that when we get married in the future... and he just hung up on me. If you love, love madly and passionately, love cannot be half-hearted. The honeymoon isn’t over for us even though today we have children. I still can’t believe we are married. Itni shiddat se Sajid mila mujhe, meine bahut dua ki na...
Sajid is very attached to his mom and family. He was travelling then and his dad was unwell. I would often drop in to meet his mom and his father. We were to get married on January 26 in Goa, but I told his mother aapka beta bhaag jayega, let’s prepone the wedding and get married in the Versova dargah (near their house) by the maulana. November 18 was an auspicious day and some of Salman’s friends also got married that day. During our nikaah I started crying when the maulana asked me ‘Aap ko Sajid ki saath nikaah kabool hai?’ I had not cried till then but at that time I couldn’t control myself.
Few know that Sajid is an extremely romantic man. Every year he does something special on our anniversary. Once he flew me down to Dubai for a day —just for dinner on the 125th floor! On our 10th anniversary we had a sangeet, mehndi and the works. I think what keeps our love fresh is because Sajid is a very understanding person. While he enjoys my bachpana, I think he’s very sensitive, vulnerable and yet intelligent.
I have seen Tamasha. The chemistry between Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone reminds me of Raj Kapoor and Nargis. They put the screen on fire when they come together on screen. He and Katrina look sweet together but when Ranbir and Deepika are together, the camera picks up some vibes... Dono phad dalenge iss picture mein... When Sajid and I are together, we are like that crazy couple in Matargashti!
This year on our anniversary we will celebrate with our family at home along with a housewarming party as we shifted to Juhu. Every anniversary I wear my wedding outfit — a red and gold. Sajid makes each day super fun, he’s my best friend and my world.”
