Sonam Kapoor may be playing a princess in her next film, but in real life, the actress (unlike most princesses) is definitely not fluffy, giddy-headed or spoiled. She’s clear, level-headed and not only has her head firmly fixed on her shoulders, she knows her next course of action too. The actress talks about why she may be directing a film in the next few years, actresses who excite her (yes, they include Deepika Padukone too, with whom Sonam has been known to indulge in a war of words with) and why her sister Rhea won’t be directing anytime soon.
My training
Sonam has thought about directing a film. She says, “I will be directing one very soon, maybe in a couple of years. I have written scripts, I have ideas/concepts... I try to understand what it is about life that I want to showcase and what it is that I would like to explore within myself as a person and as an artiste, what I would like to see visually and I put that down. Let’s see whatever comes of it. My training has been in direction. I was Sanjay Leela’s Bhansali’s assistant director for three years and then also in terms of school (She studied theatre and arts at the United World College of South-East Asia for her pre-university education), I’ve trained in direction and writing.”
Choice of genres
What genres attract her as a director? “I find the genres of drama and romance very attractive. I love comedy as well. But I would love to direct women-centric subjects, too. I don’t think I am talented enough to direct myself, but maybe some day I would like to”, she shares, adding, “Right now, several actresses inspire me to direct — Swara Bhaskar, Alia Bhatt, Parineeti Chopra, Anushka Sharma and Deepika Padukone, too. They are all so good!”
Rhea not directing
Rumours were rife that Rhea would turn director soon. Sonam clarifies, “While I think Rhea would make a brilliant director, she has said she’s not doing it. She’s got too much going on — producing three films, two TV shows and running my dad’s company. She’s also doing my styling and we are launching a clothing line. And she has to deal with too much of my nonsense (laughs).”
