THE STAGE IS SET FOR THE BIG DIWALI RELEASE!
By next Thursday, the big Diwali release Prem Ratan Dhan Payo will be out all over. It stars Salman Khan and Sonam Kapoor and is directed by Sooraj Barjatya, who returns to direction after almost 9 years (his last outing was Vivah). Salman and Sooraj go back a long way. Salman’s first big hit was Maine Pyar Kiya that was directed by Sooraj. After that, both teamed together for Hum Aapke Hai Koun, a film that became a landmark film of Indian Cinema! Their third film together was Hum Saath Saath Hain, a fine film but didn’t get the due maybe. Salman himself says that Hum Saath Saath Hain was better than Hum Aapke Hai Koun! Sooraj then made Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon where he tried to appear ‘cool’. But it backfired and then he made Vivah, wherein he went back to making clean, family entertainers. And it worked big time! Prem Ratan Dhan Payo is also in the same zone and looks great from the trailers and songs. If the film clicks, it can work BIG time as it has a rooted appeal and hence can succeed pan India.
Meanwhile, the next 7 days will be bad for box office as the Diwali preparations will be on in full swing. Hence, many avoid watching films in this period. Some half a dozen films are releasing tomorrow – Charlie Kay Chakkar Mein, Four Pillars Of Basement, Ranbanka, Yaara Silly Silly and Run Bhuumi. Sadly, none of them will click. 5-6 films releasing together is suicidal but this trend never changes and one just wonders why!
