Wrestling champ Sangram Singh exults on Salman’s Sultan act
Subhash K Jha (DNA; July 16, 2016)

Wrestling champ Sangram Singh is exceedingly happy with what Salman Khan has done to the wrestler’s fraternity in Sultan. He enthuses, “With this one film, wrestling has acquired a kind of national recognition that it never had. Issko kehte hain star power. Sultan is highly motivational. Many times while watching the film, I felt that it was me up there struggling as a wrestler. I’ve been down and out, just like Salman’s Sultan. There was a time when I was in a wheelchair and I was told, forget wrestling, I’d be unable to walk.”

Sangram loves the never-say-die spirit displayed by Sultan. “That never-give-up attitude, that’s me. Many who saw the film said seeing Salmanji reminded them of me.” However, there were certain scenes and events in the film that Sangram found hard to believe. “Kuch cheezen unbelievable thi. After winning Olympic Gold and becoming a World Champion Sultan is shown collecting chanda (funds) of 10-20 rupees. Nevertheless, this is Salmanji’s best performance to date. Anushkaji has also given a good performance.”

Most importantly, Sangram feels Sultan will popularise wrestling. “Just as hockey got a boost after Chak De, I feel Sultan will take wrestling from the akhada to living rooms and stadiums in the cities. Now, we’ve Aamir Khanji also coming up soon with a film on wrestling. So, it is a good time for wrestling in this country.”

Sangram is happy to see indigenous sports getting their dues. “For too long cricket and football were the only celebrated games in India. Now kabaddi and wrestling, which are so linked to the Indian ethos, are also being recognised. I am very happy.” Wouldn’t Sangram have wanted to play Sultan? “No! Audiences would not have come to see me on screen.Woh Salmanji ka jalwa hai jo wrestling wali film itni zabardast hit bana di,” says Sangram.
