For Akshay and Veer, sky’s the limit

HINDUSTAN TIMES (January 23, 2025)

It was all about actor Akshay Kumar’s witty charm and his Sky Force co-star, debutant Veer Pahariya’s charismatic presence as the duo visited HT City for the Stars in the City session. The actors engaged in a candid conversation with Sonal Kalra, Chief Managing Editor, Entertainment and Lifestyle, Hindustan Times, about the film and their on-screen camaraderie.

‘Kyun na karun deshbhakti ki films?’
Known for being passionate about his craft, Akshay asserted that he is confident in his choice of scripts, even if that means facing criticism for taking on patriotic roles. Talking about this film, the 57-year-old said, “It’s not the same genre. This is a different story. There is nothing similar to Airlift or Rustom (both 2016) or any other film.”

He expressed gratitude at having received the opportunity to portray several films with patriotic undertones. “I’m so lucky that I get a chance to play so many characters. God has been so kind, I got to play Lord Krishna and Lord Shiva... What else can I ask for? If I’m getting such a lovely opportunity, you think I should give it a miss because some people say, ‘Aap deshbakhti ki film kyun karte ho?’ Kyun na kare!”

‘Took advice from Janhvi’
Meanwhile, Veer was playfully asked about seeking acting tips from actor Janhvi Kapoor, who is now “nearly a family member” since she’s dating his elder brother, Shikhar Pahariya.

“She’s a very talented actress and has played a real character in Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl (2020). That was a biopic as well. She’s experienced. So yes, I did take a lot of advice (from her),” the 30-year-old said, adding, “Many of my friends are actors and I don’t miss out the chance of asking them for any advice.”

During a recent interaction at Stars In The City with Sonal Kalra, Chief Managing Editor, Entertainment and Lifestyle, Hindustan Times, actors Akshay Kumar and Veer Pahariya took some questions from the fans.

What is the sentiment of Sky Force? Tell us about your characters in the film.
Akshay: Everyone had declared Squadron Leader A B Devaiah (on whom Veer’s character is based) a traitor, and for 23 years, no one knew that he was, in fact, a hero. I play Wing Commander K O Ahuja, a character based on Group Captain O P Taneja, who is senior to the character Veer plays in the film — T Vijaya. Aap log vishwas karenge ki 23 saal baad inke parivar ko sarkaar ne Maha Vir Chakra diya? This film is not just about war; it also delves into what happens to the family and children left behind.

Veer, Akshay is known for his discipline. During the shoot, did he encourage you to follow a fitness routine? And Akshay, what advice would you give people for maintaining good health?
Veer: Akshay sir is always on the move, running around the set. He made sure I did the same! I had a great time following his fitness routine — he’s been a huge influence on me.
Akshay: My advice is simple — wake up early, exercise and work hard for 8–10 hours. Don’t listen to anyone who tells you not to work hard! In today’s world, the biggest health concerns in our country are diabetes and heart disease. The best way to fight them is through discipline — stay active, eat right and take care of yourself.

Paresh Rawal (actor) recently shared a picture with you enjoying Jaipur’s winter during the Bhooth Bangla shoot. You’re reuniting with him and director Priyadarshan after years — how does it feel?
Akshay: Working with Priyadarshan again felt like going back to school! He’s the person who taught me how comedy works, how action should be timed.

Franchise films and sequels have been hugely successful in recent years. What do you think is the secret behind their success?
Akshay: Honestly, when it comes to films, you can never predict what will work. Right now, sequels are trending. But the next time I’m here, the conversation might be about how sequels aren’t working anymore! It all depends on the audience’s mood, and we can never be sure. I choose films that resonate with me, and as long as I believe in them, I’m happy with the outcome.

Everyone wants to know — when is Hera Pheri 3 happening?
Akshay: Hera Pheri 3 is in production. If all goes well, we should start rolling this year.
