Filmmaker Sajid Nadiadwala’s banner, Nadiadwala Grandson, continues the family tradition of making films for universal consumption
MID-DAY (June 3, 2016)
Filmmaker Sajid Nadiadwala’s banner, Nadiadwala Grandson, has been flying high for the last several years with several hit films. He is known to work with leading stars and directors. After Baaghi which released in April this year, he now has Housefull 3 followed by Dishoom. A tete- a- tete with the filmmaker...
You continue with the tradition of making films for family entertainment.
It is in my DNA. Whatever I greenlight is always for universal consumption — films that families can watch together. My grandfather and father also never made adults films. We have been entertaining the masses since the 1950s. It is just that whatever scripts we select and the films that are made have always been subjects that can entertain the young and the old. There is no thought process to it, it has just been happening. I am going with the flow.
The year 2016 saw Baaghi and now it is Housefull 3 and Dishoom from your banner.
The last couple of months have been extremely hectic for us with releases one after the other. I greenlight the project myself. I do not work in a corporate environment and have script doctors telling me what to do. It is an organic process. It could just be an idea and a script could be developed on it. I go with my gut feeling.
Nadiadwala Grandson is known to work with leading stars, but has been launching newcomers too.
We launched Tiger Shroff and Kriti Sanon in Heropanti in 2014. It just happened, there was no modus operadi. I came across a script and felt that it needed new faces. Whether it is working with a known name or a newcomer, it just happens because it suits the script requirements. I am planning to launch some new directors in my future productions.
You have worked with directors with various sensibilities, but the entertaining factor has always been important to you.
I have always tried to have a good marriage between art and entertainment. I produced Imtiaz Ali’s 2014 film Highway, but it was not dark and dreary. It had some beautiful songs and and a redemption at the end. One of my next productions, Rangoon, is directed by Vishal Bharadwaj. He is known to make a certain type of film, it is art, yet there is the entertaining factor. The film releases in February 2017. There is also Judwaa 2 to be directed by David Dhawan and starring Varun Dhawan.
Will there be a sequel to your 2014 directorial venture, Kick?
The last several months we have had releases one after the other. After Dishoom releases, I plan to write. I want to concentrate on writing. There are several ideas that I discuss with Salman Khan and then we try to work it out. There has always been speculation about Kick and it will continue till it kickstarts.
