We asked celebrities to recount their most abiding December 31 memory. Some extolled spontaneity, others prescribed debauchery

My most memorable New Year's would be the first one I celebrated with my son Viaan in London. It was so special to usher in a new year with him, that too in London, which is my go-to place for celebrating Christmas and the end of any year.

The year 2000 stands out in my memory. My friends from the States had been planning a Goa trip for long, but it was always kept on the backburner. They somehow landed up there together. The hotels were all packed. All I could find was a dilapidated bungalow by the beach. And we rented a music system from the neighbour. Last minute spontaneity is always more special.

If I were to be honest, I'd have to admit that I have no December 31 memories. A decade ago, I remember the young, reckless me partying on New Year's Eve. I woke up late in the afternoon the next day, surrounded by my girl friends. 'Kya kiya tha humne kal raat ko?' That's what I kept asking everyone. But wait, this is not one crazy party memory. This is how I celebrate every New Year. And that's how it should be - washed out, wasted, surrounded by friends and family, not knowing what happened the previous night.

During college, there were many bikers in my group. So one New Year's Eve, we took off to the Sahyadri mountains. It was a dark, cold, quiet and beautiful night. We spent it singing songs, riding bikes and laughing. Naturally, we have remained great friends.

I live in Goa when I'm not working. On December 31 last year, my friends were out camping on a secluded beach. I drove my bike for three-and-a-half hours and I joined a party of 15 people. The food was laid out. There was great wine and we listened to some fantastic music off a boom box for hours. We slept under the stars. I woke up to see three dolphins playing in the sea water. That New Year's morning was nothing short of magical.

I usually like being with my family on important days and I have vivid memories of celebrating many a New Year's with them. Of late, however, I have gotten busy and I have a hectic schedule. It's been relatively tough to spend December 31 with relatives. Last year, though, I spent it with my mother during the shoot of ABCD2 in Las Vegas. Hugging her at 12 is still how I'd like to usher in January 1.

Six years ago, I was in New Delhi, taking a break from my college in New York. My friends and I had piled up in a car and were on our way to a house party. The fog was so bad that the traffic had come to a standstill. We had some champagne bottles in the car, which we popped open. Music blared from the radio. We danced on the road. The best New Year's, really.

I've done the whole 'loud partying' thing on New Year's in Goa, Antarctica, everywhere. But the one that is stuck in my memory is the one from 2004. I was in Phuket. We landed late at night and slept through the next day. We woke up to the devastation caused by the tsunami. The hotel staff requested that we stay back, for they had already incurred severe losses. We did. For New Year's Eve, the staff served dinner on the terrace of the hotel. At 12, we lit Chinese lanterns and set them afloat in the air. We prayed for the lives that were lost. It was also a prayer of gratitude.

I am not so sure about the best party I have ever had, but in the year 2007, I went on a cruise with the Indian team, in Australia. I had a real good time and that's a memory that is strongly etched in my mind.

I've had a beautiful experience in Goa. I spent a magical night on the beach with friends. We drank wine straight from the bottle and ate some local seafood in takeaway containers. We had a midnight picnic and slept under the stars on the beach, even though we had rented some beach shacks. I woke up to little crabs crawling over my body at sunrise.
